Starting point is 00:00:47 megan fitzpatrick reports after nearly two years off n hl ice goaltender carter heart is being welcomed back into the league joining the los vegas golden nights a brief statement from the team said it aligned with the reinstatement process set by the NHL and its players association and that it expects their players to meet their team's standards. Hart, Dylan Dubay, Michael McLeod and Calfoot were all playing in the NHL at the time they were charged by police in London, Ontario in 2024. Alex Formanton was playing in a Swiss league. Hart took a leave of absence from the Philadelphia Flyers and his contract was not renewed. All five players were found not guilty of sexual assault after a lengthy and at times dramatic trial that concluded in July. Hart testified in his own defense.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Last month, the NHL announced that the acquitted players would be allowed to sign with teams as of October 15th and hit the ice on December 1st. Megan Fitzpatrick, CBC News, Toronto. Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ridgely Stadale's Day, on his government's plans to tackle crime. At the center of the policy is reforms to the bail system that he says will keep those accused of violent crimes
Starting point is 00:01:56 off the streets while they await trial. Creating new reverse onus bail provisions for violent and organized crime-related offenses. It will no longer be up to the crown to prove why someone should stay behind bars. It will be up to the accused to prove to the court why they can be trusted to be released. As well, Carney says his government will introduce tougher sentences and the possibility of consecutive sentences for certain crimes, including violent auto theft, organized crime, organized retail theft, and home invasion. People convicted of sexual assault will no longer be eligible for conditional sentences served in the community.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Edmonton police say three. They've located the remains of a missing teen in a rural area outside of town, and they've arrested and charged one man in the murder of 14-year-old Samuel Bird. He disappeared in early June after he left his home to visit a friend. A 38-year-old man has been charged with secondary murder and 13 other offenses. The U.S. President says he intends to meet his Russian counterpart again in Hungary. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine in a phone call today. It comes as Kiev is urging Washington to supply it with long-range missiles in a bid to put further pressure on Moscow.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Willie Lowry reports. U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at length. over the phone. Trump has made ending the conflict a foreign policy priority, but has admitted that it has been more difficult than he anticipated. The two countries will take part in high-level talks led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio next week. Trump says he then plans to meet with Putin in Budapest, Hungary. The call comes ahead of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House Friday. Press Secretary Caroline Levitt says Trump will brief Zelensky about the call. So I think the president deserves a great deal of credit for doing that, coming home, dealing with so many domestic issues,
Starting point is 00:03:57 and then, again, hopping on yet another call with President Putin and hosting President Zelensky to try to move the ball forward in peace and end this conflict in Russia. The war has escalated in recent weeks with Ukraine targeting Russian oil refineries and Russia attacking Ukraine's power grid. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington.
