Starting point is 00:00:38 donald trump's former national security adviser john bolton worked in the first trump administration but later became a vocal critic he's accused of mishandling classified documents chris reyes has the latest according to court records these charges have to do with the transmission of national defense information retention of national defense information and, as you said, mishandling of classified information. Just to give you some background, back in August, the FBI searched Bolton's Maryland home and Washington office. Agents said that they seized documents marked classified, confidential, and secret.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Remember, back in 2023, President Trump was charged under this same law for allegedly keeping and refusing to return classified national defense documents found at Mar-a-Lago. Bolton's lawyers said that the seized documents were cleared in pre-publication reviews, and many were decades old. We're still waiting on official reaction from Bolton's camp and the Democrats. The CBC's Chris Reyes reporting from New York. The cafe in Surrey, BC, has been targeted by gunmen for a third time. Police say they received a call just after 3.30 this morning, and they say the shooting appears to be part of extortion-related violence targeting people in the side. South Asian community. Starting point is 00:02:01 The only silver lining in this very disturbing sort of trend and targeting of this business is that none of the staff have been hurt. Certainly this has the earmarks of extortion. Ourselves in terms of Surrey Police Service, as well as the provincial extortion task force, already have eyes on this investigation and we plan to move it forward. There have been 65 extortion related cases and 35 associated shootings in Surrey this year. Edmonton police have arrested a suspect in the murder of 14-year-old Samuel Byrd. He disappeared in early June after leaving his home to visit a friend. A 38-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder. Prime Minister Mark Carney released details today on his government's
Starting point is 00:02:43 plans to tackle crime. At the center of the policy is reforms to the bail system that he says will keep those accused of violent crimes off the streets while they await trial. Creating new reverse onus bail provisions for violent and organized crime-related offenses. It will no longer be up to the crown to prove why someone should stay behind bars. It will be up to the accused to prove to the court why they can be trusted to be released. As well, Carney says his government will introduce tougher sentences and the possibility of consecutive sentences for certain crimes, including violent auto theft, organized crime, organized retail theft and home invasion. People convicted of sexual assault will no longer be
Starting point is 00:03:28 eligible for conditional sentences served in the community. U.S. President Donald Trump says an in-person meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin will likely happen within two weeks. I thought it was a very good phone call. I thought very productive. The two presidents spoke at length over the phone today. They plan to meet in Hungary to once again discuss an end to the war in Ukraine. Trump says he thought negotiations would have ended quicker due to his relationship with Putin. And the president was doubtful about an eventual meeting between Putin and Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky. We have a problem. They don't get along too well, those two. And it's sometimes tough to have meetings. So we may do something where we're separate, but separate but equal. This is a terrible relationship the two of them have. And it's one of those things.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Zelensky is in Washington talking to U.S. officials ahead of his meeting with Trump at the White House tomorrow. A co-founder of the hard rock band KISS has died. Ace Frey was lead guitarist from the band's founding in 1973 until going solo in 1982. He reunited with Kiss from 1996 to 2002. Fraley's family says he suffered injuries in a fall last month. He, along with the rest of Kiss, were inducted into the rock and roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Ace Freely was 74. That is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Mike Miles.
