Starting point is 00:00:41 and for now he's holding off on more retaliatory measures but provincial leaders with competing interests in competing industries are demanding a tougher approach from ottawa kate mckenna has more there's times to hit back and there's times to talk and right now is the time to talk Prime Minister Mark Carney is pushing back against hitting back. It's in response to calls from Ontario Premier Doug Ford for Canada to retaliate against the United States following the automaker Stalantis' decision to move Jeep production from Brampton to Illinois. With 3,000 auto jobs on the line,
Starting point is 00:01:14 Ford threatened to cut off or limit energy sales to the United States. This schism comes as cracks in Team Canada begin to emerge. Over the summer, the premiers expressed total confidence in the prime minister's ability to, to take on the U.S. administration. But now the groundswell to get tougher on trade grows, and premiers, sensitive to their own workers and their own economies, are demanding to be the priorities in trade talks.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Carney finds himself managing a cast of characters with competing interests on both sides of the border. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Ottawa. In BC, a cafe in Surrey has been targeted by gunmen for a third time. Police say they received a call just after 3.30 the morning on Thursday, and they say the shooting appears to be part of... of extortion-related violence, which is targeting people in the South Asian community. Ian MacDonald speaks for Surrey Police.
Starting point is 00:02:04 The only silver lining in this very disturbing sort of trend and targeting of this business is that none of the staff have been hurt. Certainly this has the earmarks of extortion. Ourselves, in terms of Surrey Police Service, as well as the provincial extortion task force, already have eyes on this investigation, and we plan to move it forward. There have been 65 extortion-related cases and 35 associated shootings in Surrey this year. Similar incidents occurred in Alberta and Ontario. A grand jury has indicted U.S. President Donald Trump's former national security advisor.
Starting point is 00:02:38 John Bolton worked in the first Trump administration, but later became a vocal critic. He's accused of mishandling classified documents. Chris Reyes has the latest. According to court records, these charges have to do with the transmission of national defense information, retention of national defense information and a mishandling of classified information. Just to give you some background, back in August, the FBI searched Bolton's Maryland home in Washington office. Agents said that they seized documents marked classified, confidential, and secret.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Remember, back in 2003, President Trump was charged under this same law for allegedly keeping and refusing to return classified national defense documents found at Maralago. Bolton's lawyers said that the seized documents were cleared in pre-publication reviews, and many were decades old. That's Chris Reyes reporting from New York. There's a new push from U.S. President Donald Trump to end the warm Ukraine, and it includes a plan for another in-person meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Paul Hunter reports from Washington.
