Starting point is 00:00:48 in the video a vehicle is stopped in front of the caps cafe the assailant looks to be wearing a hoodie his arm is outstretched from the passenger window he's holding a gun and he fires it at least 10 times. It is the third time the cafe has been shot up in nearly four months. The cafe is owned by a famous Indian comedian and TV host, Kapal Sharma. Ian McDonald is with the Surrey Police Service. I will say that there are earmarks of extortion, but allow the investigators to do their work and make that ultimate determination. Indian media is reporting the Bishnoi gang, an Indian criminal enterprise tied to the extortion of a number of BC businesses in primarily South Asian communities, has claimed to responsible. in a social media post.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Surrey police say it is too soon to know if those claims are accurate, and that there have been 65 extortion-related cases with 35 associated shootings so far this year. Caroline Bargut, CBC News, Vancouver. Prime Minister Mark Carney says the automaker Stilantis is looking at finding a new model to be produced at its idled plant in Brampton, Ontario. But it will depend on the language of a renewed free trade deal
Starting point is 00:01:57 with the United States. Earlier this week, Stalantis announced it was moving production of the Jeep Compass from Brampton to its Illinois facility. Gold prices have surged above $4,300 per ounce over the last few weeks, and some Canadian jewelers have been forced to raise their prices. Jenna Benchitrit reports. There are certain products that we've already had to increase the pricing on. The high cost of gold isn't sustainable for Vancouver-based jewelry designer Melanie Alt,
Starting point is 00:02:27 and an uptick in silver prices isn't making it easier. The company now sells less fine jewelry and relies on cheaper materials like wood, leather, and stone. But another Toronto company, Jenny Bird, is taking a different approach. C.O. Preeti Kapoor says it relies on supplier discounts and delayed shipments to avoid hiking prices. We're more focused on keeping the jewelry as is, the material as is. Gold is considered a safe asset when the economy is unstable.
Starting point is 00:02:55 The surge began when investors, spooked by a shaky U.S. dollar, rushed to buy the precious metal. But as analyst John Inge points out, there's only so much of it to go around. There's not that much of gold mining going on. According to Ng, history shows those prices are likely to keep going up. Starting point is 00:03:24 As Mark Gollum reports, some say it's not surprising he's, decided to sign with a U.S. team. It's been a long road to get back to this point. Carter Hart speaks to the media shortly after his on-ice workout with the Golden Knights. It was announced he would be joining the Las Vegas franchise. This comes after he and four other members of Canada's 2018 World Junior Team were found not guilty in a sexual assault trial earlier this year. Mason, a professor of sport management at the University of Alberta, says it makes sense that Hart would join an American team. There's not the same level of scrutiny that the players received as a result of the trial. Hart had been the starting goalie with the Philadelphia Flyers for six seasons. He took a leave of absence just before the sexual assault charges. Last month, the flyers announced he would not be returning to the team.
