from cbc news the world is sour i'm neil kumar the toronto blue jays are now down three games
or two in the american league championship series the jays managed to take games three and four in
in seattle but lost game five tonight as jamie strassion reports the series now heads back to
toronto for game six on sunday after the disappointment of losing the first two games of this
american league championship series at home the blue jays knew they had to come
to Seattle and win two of three games if they wanted their season to continue.
They won games three and four convincingly, and for a moment, they looked like they were on
their way to winning all three in Seattle.
Then the eighth inning happened, with the Jay's leading to one, Toronto's bullpen imploded,
giving up two home runs, including a grand slam, and just like that, Seattle led six to,
sending Mariners fans into a frenzy and quieting the thousands of Blue Jay fans sprinkled
throughout the stands. This series now goes back to Toronto for game six on Sunday. A Blue Jay's
win means game seven on Monday. A Seattle win would send the Mariners to their first world series
in franchise history. Jamie Strachan, CBC News, Seattle. The Los Angeles Dodgers have won the
2025 National League pennant after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLCS. The Dodgers
swept the series four games to none after a 5-1 win in game four. Showyotani hit three home runs and pitched
six innings with 10 strikeouts and was awarded the MVP after the game.
L.A. will now look to win back-to-back World Series championships
as they await the winner between Toronto and Seattle.
The meeting between Donald Trump and Volari Zelensky
offered the promise of high-powered American help for Ukraine
and the hope of some insight into the U.S. president's next move with Russia.
But after their latest face-to-face,
Zelensky may be leaving Washington empty-handed.
Paul Hunter reports.
I'm confident that with your help, we can stop this war.
So what does with your help mean the expectation on Zelensky's ask?
American-made Tomahawk cruise missiles, weaponry that could strike deep inside Russia, including even Moscow.
As the fighting continues in Ukraine, Tomahawks are seen by many as a potential game changer in the war,
though Russian President Vladimir Putin has already made clear giving Tomahawks to you.
Ukraine would be seen as a major escalation. Zolensky's view?
We understand what we need to push Putin to negotiation table.
But Trump didn't offer up any weaponry to Zelensky, at least not publicly.
Would much rather have them not need Tomahawks.
Would much rather have the war be over.
Trump posted on truth social afterward that the meeting was interesting, cordial,
but that both sides should just stop fighting and both claim victory.
Paul Hunter, CBC News, Washington.
The Carney government is upping its pledge to boost border security.
After earmarking more than a billion dollars, it's adding hundreds of millions more,
promising a crackdown on legal drugs and guns.
Livy Stavanovich reports.
Public safety minister, Gary Anandisangery,
outlined why the federal government believes Canada's biggest border investment
needs to grow even bigger.
This really is about ensuring Canada's safety and security and our sovereignty.
Liberal MP Wayne Long suggested the announcement
is meant to appease Donald Trump.
I mean, obviously the U.S. has raised concerns with respect to drug trafficking in fentanyl.
Ottawa already set aside $1.3 billion to improve border security.
Now it's adding more than $600 million.
The new money to be announced in the fall budget for five years,
to hire 1,000 new personnel with the Canada Border Services Agency
and make their jobs more attractive.
The government also plans to increase CBSA's
recruit stipend from $125 to $525 per week.
Olivia Estefanovich, CBC News, Ottawa.
And that is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Neil Kumar.
Thank you.
