Italy is bracing for a potential shock to one of its most iconic exports, pasta.
In less than a month, the United States is planning to impose massive tariffs on several Italian pasta brands.
An economist are warning that the fallout could ripple far beyond the dinner table.
Megan Williams has more from Rome.
It's easy to cook, low cost.
Now, it's facing a serious threat.
Last month, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced new tariffs of almost 92% on 13 Italian pasta brands
set to go into effect January 1st.
The U.S. claims Italian pasta producers are dumping,
that is, selling pasta below market value in the U.S. to gain market share.
Italian agriculture minister Francesco Lolo Brigida called the move
a hyper-protectionist measure against Italian producers.
If applied, these tariffs will be on top of the 15% already in place
for all EU exports to the U.S., pushing the total duty on pasta to 107%.
Pasta makes up nearly 20% of Italian exports to the states, putting more than a billion dollars worth of exports at risk.
Several Italian companies are challenging the tariffs legally and appealing to the EU for help.
