Starting point is 00:00:00 The spirit of innovation is deeply ingrained in Canada, and Google is helping Canadians innovate in ways both big and small, from mapping accessible spaces so the disabled community can explore with confidence, to unlocking billions in domestic tourism revenue. Thousands of Canadian companies are innovating with Google AI. Innovation is Canada's story. Let's tell it together. Find out more at g.co slash Canadian Innovation. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Neil Hurland.
Starting point is 00:00:40 The Toronto Blue Jays are headed to the World Series. Tonight, the Jays beat the Seattle Mariners in game seven of the American League Championship Series. Final score 4-3. Toronto will now face the L.A. Dodgers in the World Series starting this Friday. The CBC's Jamie Strassion was at the game and joins me now. what was it like to watch the Jay's win tonight? Neil, I've been going to Blue Jay Games for more than four decades. I've been going to Toronto sporting events my whole life.
Starting point is 00:01:09 I've never heard a building louder ever. You know, you hear the, you know, people say, oh, the roof was going to get blown off the dome. You really felt in that moment that it could have. An epic crowd, an epic reaction, an epic moment. And Jamie, what's the historic context here? When you look at Toronto Blue J Sports history, have Joe Carter's home run, you have Jose Batista's bat flip, and now you have George Springer's
Starting point is 00:01:35 go-ahead three-round homer that propelled the Blue Jays into their first World Series in more than 30 years, absolutely blowing the roof off of the dome. You couldn't hear yourself thinking there when that ball went out, giving the Blue Jays a four-three lead, which they held on to to defeat the Seattle Mariners in seven games, and they'll now go on to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. And of course, this didn't look likely at the start of this series. It looked like the Jays might go down and defeat. Neil, this series really represents all that this Blue Jay season has been down but never out. They lost the first two games at home.
Starting point is 00:02:12 They had to go to Seattle and win at least two games just to come back to Toronto. They won game six, down 3-1 in game seven. They came back to pull it out. We've heard the word resiliency all year around this Blue Jay team, no more so than tonight. Thanks, Jamie. Thank you, Neil. The CBC's Jamie Strassion in downtown Toronto. The votes are still being counted tonight in Alberta municipal elections,
Starting point is 00:02:38 but the incumbent mayor of Calgary, Joti Gondek, has just conceded defeat. I will offer my congratulations to the winner and their team once we have a final result. Campaigns are tough, and both of the frontrunners should be very proud of their accomplishments. This year's results are taking longer because the ballots are being, counted by hand. The race for Edmonton mayor is still too close to call. Japan has a new prime minister, and for the first time ever, it's a woman. And for the first time in 32 years, the Blue Jays... And we apologize, that's the wrong audio. The Japanese Parliament has elected Sanai Takaichi
Starting point is 00:03:21 as the country's prime minister. She's 64 years old and described as an ultra-conservative. She replaces Shigero Ishiba, who lasted only a year and suffered a disastrous election loss in July. Japan's Liberal Democratic Party has formed a coalition with another party to form government. We are waiting for the latest Canadian inflation numbers Tuesday morning. Economists expect to see that inflation ticked up again in August. Peter Armstrong reports. For a long stretch there, inflation was the single most important indicator on the economic horizon. Now, though, with a full-blown trade war with the U.S., that concern has shifted away from inflation and focused almost entirely now on growth.
Starting point is 00:04:06 GDP contracted in the second quarter of this year. Exports fell 27%. Canada has dodged an outright recession so far. And Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklin says the economy is set to recover, but not by very much. We do expect growth to resume in the second half of the year, but with weakness and business investment and exports and uncertainty about jobs, GDP growth is likely to be soft. And in light of that softness, the Bank of Canada believes the economy needs a boost. It cut rates last month, and investors believe it will cut again next week, even if the
Starting point is 00:04:45 inflation numbers today show prices are starting to climb once again. Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Toronto. And that is your world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. Thank you.
