From CBC News, the world this hour.
Starting point is 00:00:38 I'm Neil Hurland. The Toronto Blue Jays are headed to the World Series. He's a sicken now. And for the first time in 32 years, the Blue Jays have won the pennant. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners last night in game seven of the American League Championship series. Final score 4-3. It's a stunning comeback for Toronto after a nerve-wracking start
Starting point is 00:01:05 to the American League series. Toronto will now face the L.A. Dodgers and the World Series starting this Friday. The Blue Jays are Canada's only Major League baseball team. The CBC's Thomas Dagglo was in front of the Rogers Center in downtown Toronto as fans left the stadium. 44,000 Blue Jays fans leaving Rogers Center spilling out into the streets of downtown Toronto.
Starting point is 00:01:27 This party is going to go, to the early morning hours. We've heard O Canada from the crowd. We've heard Go, Jays, Go chance and some chance that we can't repeat on the air about the L.A. Dodgers. This is Front Street in downtown Toronto. We've seen people scaling the streetlight poles,
Starting point is 00:01:44 not something that we would advise, but this is the level of excitement now in Toronto with the Jays headed to the World Series for the first time since 1993. All of this, of course. The key moment, George Springer, in the seventh inning, the Jays had put two runners in squirrels,
Starting point is 00:01:58 scoring position. George Springer, undoubtedly, the regular season MVP for the Blue Jays hitting it out of the park, and the Jays never looked back with that 4-3 victory. The Toronto Blue Jays that finished in the last place in their division last season and now have home field advantage in the World Series facing a team, the Dodgers that are defending World Series champions and have so far only lost one single game this postseason. For now lots of excitement, looking forward to game one Friday. Thomas Dagg, CBC News, Toronto. the mayor of Calgary is conceding defeat. This didn't end up the way that we had all hoped, but I'm standing here very proud. The votes are still being counted in Monday's municipal election,
Starting point is 00:02:39 but Jody Gondek says she won't be re-elected as mayor. Two other candidates, Jeremy Farkas, and Sonia Sharp are leading the vote count. Gondek blames her loss on public apathy and anger. I think people are tired, and I think a lot of people gave up. I think a lot of folks were struggling with affordability. They were struggling with the teacher strike, and they're very much struggling with what they're seeing online. I can tell you that the vitriol and the hatred is jarring, and it's something that I've experienced over the last four years. The vote for Edmonton mayor is still too close to call. British Columbia is preparing to welcome more than 140 health care workers from the U.S. The province is actively recruiting doctors and nurses
Starting point is 00:03:25 unhappy with delivering health care under the Trump administration to fill gaps. Lindsay Duncombe has more. Randy Fry pulls into the parking lot at Nanaimo General Hospital. She's a nurse, and she's moved to BC to escape Donald Trump. She and her 13-year-old son, Bruce, moved to Nanaimo from just outside Los Angeles. If you want to care for others in a place that cares about you, come to BC. British Columbia is desperate for health care workers, so the province, is targeting Americans with an advertising campaign
Starting point is 00:03:59 and fast-tracking the process to get them jobs. Henrietta Addo was working in Michigan. She's black and worried she would lose her job as the administration-slashed diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. It was like, okay, if they start making cuts, will you be at? Both Addo and Frye expect to be busy. The community is in the grips of an opioid crisis. But Fry says she's ready for the challenge.
Starting point is 00:04:25 It just solidifies that this is where I belong. Lindsay Duncombe, CBC News, Nanaimal. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is on route to Israel. He'll join the U.S. Special Envoy, Steve Whitkoff, and President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who are already in the country. The United States is trying to bolster the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Neil Hurland.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Thank you.
