from c bcc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings there is a new development in canada's trade war with the united states
in response to an ad campaign ontario has been running in the u.s president donald trump has called off all trade talks with
canada katie simpson reports high tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by
foreign countries. The offending ad features highlights of a 1987 speech by U.S. President Ronald Reagan,
which makes the case against tariffs. After a complaint by Reagan's Presidential Foundation
that Ontario did not get permission to use the audio and video, Donald Trump made his
stunning announcement. Writing on social media in all caps, all trade negotiations with Canada
are hereby terminated. He called the ad fraudulent and fake, accusing Canada of running the spot
as a way to influence the U.S. Supreme Court
ahead of a hearing next month
that will determine whether most of Trump's tariffs are legal.
Because of tariffs, the money pouring into our country, the plants that are opening.
Ontario spent $75 million to run the ad on major American broadcasters.
This comes at a pivotal moment in trade talks,
a time when Canada had thought progress was being made
in an effort to lower some tariffs, momentum that is now stalled.
Katie Simpson, CBC News, Washington.
Ford is responding to the claim by the Reagan Foundation that Ontario is misrepresenting the former
U.S. President's comments. In a statement to CBC News, Ford's office says the commercial uses an
unedited excerpt from one of President Reagan's public addresses, which is available through
public domain. Still on the trade front, industry minister Melanie Jolie says General Motors
has 15 days to provide an update on the future of its auto assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario.
Jolie says the workers deserve, quote, clarity and action.
GM announced this week that it's ending production of its electric delivery van at facility,
putting more than a thousand jobs in jeopardy.
Ottawa says GM and Stalantas both can expect to see changes in the number of specific U.S. made vehicles.
Canada will be allowing into the country tariff-free.
Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky, is in London today for a meeting with what's known as the Coalition of the Willing.
British Prime Minister Kier Starrmer is hosting the session.
and is looking to push for more sanctions on Russia.
Anna Cunningham has more now from London.
British Prime Minister Kirstama is expected to urge Ukraine's allies to act
to take Russian oil and gas off the global market.
It follows US sanctions targeting two big Russian oil companies.
Stama will also call for Ukraine's allies to unlock frozen Russian assets held worldwide
to fund Ukraine's defenses.
Also on the agenda in London later will be the supply of long-range.
missiles to Ukraine. Zelensky failed to get U.S. President Donald Trump to agree to supply
Tomahawk missiles when they met in Washington last Friday. Overnight, Russian authorities say
Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region. Five people were reportedly injured. The Russian
President Vladimir Putin says any use of long-range missiles on Russia will be met with a very
serious response. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London.
Game one of this year's World Series goes tonight in Toronto, the Blue Jays, against the defending champion L.A. Dodgers, who are heavily favored by most baseball pundits.
The Dodger lineup includes at least three future Hall of Famers, including Japanese superstar Show A. Otani.
But Blue J. manager, John Schneider, refuses to be intimidated.
That is a beatable baseball team that has its flaws and that has its really, really good strengths.
How we expose each of them will determine who we will.
wins the series. I'll say it till the day I die, I'll put this group of 26 up against
anybody. Over the course of their storied history, the Dodger franchise has won eight
World Series titles. The Blue Jays have two championships to their credit. Game time tonight
for Game 1 is 8 o'clock Eastern. And that is the World Series. Coming up, that is the
world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
Thank you.
