Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. In a late-night post on social media, U.S. President Donald Trump has called off all trade talks with Canada. This latest development of the Canada-U.S. trade war is a direct response to the Ontario government and its campaign against the Trump tariffs. Ashley Burke reports. Premier Doug Ford recently launched a $75 million ad campaign in the U.S.
Starting point is 00:01:05 High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries. This ad uses former U.S. President Ronald Reagan's radio address from 1987. Market shrink and collapse. The Ronald Reagan Foundation claims the ad misrepresents his address and says Ontario didn't have permission to use it. Trump posted on true social that based on what he called egregious behavior, the trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated. All of this comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney
Starting point is 00:01:35 suggested early Thursday if trade talks fail, he'll act. Let's be clear about if we ultimately don't make progress in these various sectors, we're going to do what's necessary to protect our workers. Carney said he wasn't ready to do that yet. The question now, will this new development change his mind? Ashley Burke, CBC News, Ottawa. Premier Ford, incidentally, is responding to the claim by the Reagan Foundation that Ontario is misrepresenting the former U.S. President's comments. In a statement to CBC News, Ford's office says the commercial uses an unedited excerpt from one of President Reagan's public addresses, which is available through public domain.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Still on the trade front, industry minister Melanie Jolie says General Motors has 15 days to provide an update on the future of its auto assembly plant in Ingram. Saul, Ontario. Jolie says the workers deserve, quote, clarity and action. GM announced this week that it's ending its production of its electric delivery van at the facility, putting more than a thousand jobs in jeopardy. With Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the table, British Prime Minister Kirstarmer is hosting the latest meeting of the Coalition of the Willing. Anna Cunningham has more now from London. British Prime Minister Kirstama is expected to earn Ukraine's allies to act to take Russian oil and gas off the global market. It follows US sanctions targeting two big Russian oil companies.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Starma will also call for Ukraine's allies to unlock frozen Russian assets held worldwide to fund Ukraine's defenses. Also on the agenda in London later will be the supply of long-range missiles to Ukraine. Zelensky failed to get US President Donald Trump to agree to supply Tomahawk missiles when they met in Washington last Friday. Overnight Russian authorities say Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region. Five people were reportedly injured. The Russian President Vladimir Putin says any use of long-range missiles on Russia will be met with a very serious response. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London.
Starting point is 00:03:43 OK, Blue J fans, your time is now. Game 1 of the World Series goes tonight in Toronto with the Js squaring off against the defending champion LA Dodgers. Jamie Stression has more. I'm just thankful and humbled. Toronto Blue Jay's manager, John Schneider, says it's natural for his team to be feeling some nerves ahead of game one of the World Series, the first in Canada since 1993. Even though the Blue Jays won more games than the Los Angeles Dodgers, it's Toronto who are the underdogs.
Starting point is 00:04:13 I think the one thing we cannot do is look over there and say that is Goliath. The team's magical, unexpected run to the World Series has fans delirious. The J's shop at the Rogers Center barely able to keep series-related items in stock. We're not going to know the next time the G's are going to make it, right? Players like Davis Schneider and Addison Barger are embracing what could be a once-in-a-care opportunity. It's great to have a whole country kind of behind you. You don't know how many times you'll make it to the World Series in your life. First pitch is just after 8 o'clock Eastern, a nation of baseball fans sure to be watching.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Jamie Strash and CBC News, Toronto. And that is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings. From CBC.
