Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings we go first to ottawa and prime minister mark carney the importance of distinguishing things we can control and things we can't control uh we can't control the trade policy of the united states that's carney's measured response this morning to u.s president Donald Trump calling off all trade talk with Canada. The Trump move is a direct response to an Ontario government ad campaign that's been running in the U.S. It features comments by the late President Ronald Reagan, who talks about the dangers of trade tariffs. Janice McGregor has more. The Ontario government spent $75 million on this ad buy on major U.S. networks, including a spot during the Blue Jays American League Championship final earlier this week.
Starting point is 00:01:25 When Doug Ford realized that the U.S. President noticed, the Premier said he knew Donald Trump wasn't happy to hear a revered free-trading president's words used against him, but sorry, not sorry. The Reagan Republicans are going to be fighting with a MAGA group, and let's hope Reagan Republicans win. When Trump took offense to Canada's digital services tax last June, Canada had to rescind it just to keep talks going. but it may not be politically sustainable here at home for the Carney government to keep making concessions just for the privilege of continuing talks without anything to show for it. Starting point is 00:02:06 Still with trade news, Prime Minister Carney left Ottawa earlier this morning on his first trip to Asia since taking office. Over nine days, Carney will be making stops in Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea, and will be on hand for two multinational summits that President Trump is also expected to attend. Prime Minister's trip is part of his government's ongoing effort to build stronger trade and diplomatic ties with a region that is feeling increasingly squeezed between the United States and China. Industry Minister Melanie Jolie says General Motors has 15 days to provide an update on the future of its auto assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Jolie says the workers deserve, quote, clarity and action. GM announced this week that its ending production of its end. its electric delivery van at the facility, putting more than a thousand jobs in jeopardy. With Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the table, British Prime Minister Kirstarmer is hosting the latest meeting of the Coalition of the Willing. The coalition is a group of countries, including Canada, united in their support for the Ukrainian war effort. Anna Cunningham has more from London. British Prime Minister Kirstarmer is expected to urge Ukraine's allies to act
Starting point is 00:03:17 to take Russian oil and gas off the global market. It follows U.S. sanctions targeting two big Russian oil companies. Starma will also call for Ukraine's allies to unlock frozen Russian assets held worldwide to fund Ukraine's defenses. Also on the agenda in London later will be the supply of long-range missiles to Ukraine. Zelensky failed to get U.S. President Donald Trump to agree to supply Tomahawk missiles when they met in Washington last Friday. Overnight Russian authorities say Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region. Five people were reportedly injured. The Russian President Vladimir Putin says any use of long-range missiles on Russia
Starting point is 00:03:58 will be met with a very serious response. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Game one of this year's World Series goes tonight in Toronto. It's the Blue Jays against the defending champion L.A. Dodgers. And Dan Shulman, the Sports Net voice of the Jays, says Toronto, we'll have its hands full. They are a great team. They've been okay offensively in the playoffs, not sensational. They can be sensational, but they've only been okay offensively.
Starting point is 00:04:26 But you do have three future Hall of Famers hitting one, two, three in the lineup. And Shoya Otati, Mookie, Betts, and Freddie Freeman. So, listen, if you want to win the World Series, you've got to beat some great teams. So tonight, the Jays and Dodgers, game one of this year's World Series at Rogers Center.
