Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. from cbc news the world this hour i'm mike miles a lot of canadians woke up happy today after game one of the world series in toronto bargers sends a towering's road right center field kiss it goodbye madison barger's pinch hit grand slam the first ever in a fall classic highlighted a nine run sixth inning for the hometown blue jays they beat the defending world series champion los angeles Dodgers 11 to 4 to grab a 1-0 series league. Barger telling Fox Sports it was a sort of memorable moment. To be honestly, I don't even remember.
Starting point is 00:01:10 It was so hard to just kind of gather my thoughts and everything. You know, it's just like a blackout moment, you know, it's just crazy. Jay's bats continued a successful run they've had all postseason. Here's manager, John Schneider. So much credit to the guys up and down the lineup, being ready to come into the game. You know, they were ready during BP. You know, talking to Nate, talking to Izzy, Addy. Those at bats in that inning, starting with Bow's walk, then a knock.
Starting point is 00:01:36 You know, it kind of just kept on going, but those were some pretty terrific at bats. Game two goes tonight at Rogers Center just after 8 p.m. Eastern with Kevin Gosman starting for the Jays. Prime Minister Mark Carney is now in Malaysia for two summits, where he hopes to develop new or expanded trade opportunities with Asian countries. His trip comes one day after U.S. President Donald Trump said he was shut. cutting down trade negotiations with Canada. Rafi Bucci Canyon is traveling with the Prime Minister. He filed this report while the plane was refueling in Hawaii. The Canadian government is framing this Mark Carney's first official trip to Asia as prime minister
Starting point is 00:02:15 as a means to help diversify Canada's trade relationships. So Carney's first stop will be in Malaysia at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit. Canada is hoping to sign a free trade agreement. with this group of 10 countries by the end of next year. Carney will be meeting bilaterally with leaders of several countries, including those of Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, Malaysia itself. Carney is then headed to Singapore for more meetings with business leaders and officials. And then you'll head to South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Carney is also hoping to meet with China's President Xi Jinping while he's at APEC. That's not confirmed yet. Rafi Bji Kahn. On CBC News, Honolulu. The European Union is putting together a plan to ensure a supply of rare earth minerals after China began restricting exports. And European Union,
Starting point is 00:03:13 excuse me, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, says Canada is part of that plan. The aim is to secure access to alternative sources of critical raw materials in the short, medium and long term for our European industries. We'll speed up work. on critical raw materials partnerships with countries like Ukraine and Australia, Canada,
Starting point is 00:03:35 Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Chile and Greenland. As well, the EU plan aims to recycle up to 95% of the rare earth minerals used in technology and batteries. As Ontario pulls back its anti-tariff ads, the BC government's about to roll out its own. Simon Fraser University International Relations Professor James Horncastle says he thinks the move makes sense, as new U.S. tariffs and duties on softwood lumber have devastated BC's forestry industry. In the case of BC, the recent softwood lumber ones have created considerable pressure upon the BC economy. As a result, the BC government is in a position where it has to do something
Starting point is 00:04:16 because otherwise it'll end up appearing weak to basically the electorate. BC's jobs ministry says the ads will be digital, not for TV or radio. They'll roll out in November. The computer system at Trudeau's, at Montreal's Trudeau Airport, rather, is up and running again, an outage-affected check-in terminals this morning, causing a slowdown and making it impossible to update the airport's online list of departure times. And a recount in Calgary's mayoral race is scheduled for Monday. Sonia Sharp requested the recount after losing to Jeremy Farkas by 581 votes. And that is your world this hour.
Starting point is 00:04:52 For CBC News, I'm Mike Miles. Thank you.
