From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Mike Miles.
Donald Trump says he's hitting Canada with more tariffs.
The U.S. President made the latest threat today in a social media post that took even the
Carney government by surprise. And yes, he's still angry about those Ontario anti-tariff ads
using a speech by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Chris Reyes has the details.
10% on top of the suite of tariffs that are already in place.
And it's all because of this ad that Ontario paid for and ran in the U.S.,
including during the World Series broadcast.
Trump has been livid about this ad ever since the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation came out saying that the ad misrepresents the Reagan's speech that it uses from 1987,
where Reagan touts the value of free trade and the dangers of tariffs.
this afternoon. He posted this. I'm just going to read it word for word. Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts and hostile act, I'm increasing the tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they're paying now. It's so far just a threat, and it's not clear if and when Trump will sign an order slapping Canada with these new tariffs.
Chris Reyes, CBC News, New York. No reaction yet from Prime Minister Mark Carney. He's arrived in Malaysia, the first
first off on a trip to several Asian countries, and the shadow, under the shadow of Donald Trump's
trade war, is focusing his efforts to diversify Canada's export markets.
Murray Brewster has more from Kuala Lumpur.
It's taken 24 hours for the Prime Minister to fly to Malaysia, and in geopolitics these days,
that's a long time. The big question on everyone's mind is whether Mark Carney will meet
with U.S. President Donald Trump here at the ASEAN summit.
Prior to leaving Ottawa, Carney said that Canada will carry on, build it,
home and seek out new partnerships. That's the focus of budget 2025 generational investment
here in Canada. And what we can also control or at least heavily influence is developing
new partnerships and opportunities, including with the economic giants of Asia. For his part,
Trump says he has no intention of meeting Carney, although that could change. Meanwhile,
the prime minister's focus is on free trade talks with ASEAN countries. A deal, however, is not
expected until next year. Murray Brewster, CBC News.
News, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia.
Police in the UK are on the hunt for an escaped sex offender.
Hadush Kabatou was mistakenly released from prison.
He was supposed to be deported back to his native Ethiopia next week.
Instead, he's been seen around London.
Metropolitan Kamik's police commander, James Conway, made a direct appeal to Kabatou.
We want to locate you in a safe and controlled way.
You had already indicated a desire to return to Ethiopia.
when speaking to immigration staff.
The best outcome for you is to make contact directly with us.
Kabatu's been convicted of sexually assaulting a woman and a 14-year-old girl.
Those crimes sparked anti-immigrant protests against across England, rather.
There's growing concern about humpback whales being hit by boats in BC waters.
The latest incident involving a whale-watching vessel that struck a humpback Thursday afternoon,
it was the third strike in the last three weeks.
The company, Prince of Whales, with an H, says the humpback appeared unharmed, but some passengers were injured during the collision.
Valeria Vergara, a whale researcher at Raincoast, B.C., says this is a busy time of year for humpbacks.
This time of the year in particular is when humpbacks are actively feeding on their feeding grounds.
They are about to migrate to their breeding grounds.
The Salish Sea is part of their feeding grounds, and there's a lot of humpbacks on the Salish Sea.
Fergara says that even when there are no visible interest injuries,
the whales can suffer long-term effects from collisions.
Well, the Toronto Blue Jays are looking to repeat the success tonight they had in the first game of the World Series,
defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 114,
the Jay's first World Series game win in 32 years.
First pitch comes just after 8 o'clock Eastern time an hour from now.
That is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Mike Miles.
Thank you.
