The BC General Employees Union has reached a tentative deal with the provincial government, which could end the strike that has impacted everything from liquor distribution to fighting wildfires. It offers a 3% wage increase in each of the four years. More than 25,000 workers have been on some form of job action, Since September 2nd, Paul Finch is the union president. We think this is a deal that addresses the priorities our members set for us when bargaining started. So the committee has unanimously recommended the deal to our membership, but ultimately it's in their hands.
Starting point is 00:01:14 A ratification vote will take place over the coming weeks. Construction is underway in the northern village of Deneer Beach, Saskatchewan, where 230 homes were destroyed by this year's wildfires. Helena Mahalik reports on the struggles of rebuilding a town from the ashes. Everything about my life is different. Rhonda where Bickey stands in the empty lot that once held her home in Tener Beach. Her house is one of over 200 in the community ravaged by the flames of this year's unprecedented wildfire season. Counselor Clayton Seawop says these fires need to be handled differently to prevent future devastation.
Starting point is 00:01:54 When we were younger, we managed our fires differently than they do now. I've noticed it now with the let it burn policy that the fires are getting out of the hand. On the other side of the border, Flynn-Flawn Manitoba had extra firefighting crews brought in during the height of the fires. But residents of Deneer Beach say their local volunteer firefighters were left to tackle the flames alone. The community wants assurance this won't happen again and is asking the Saskatchewan government for more, firefighter crews and water bombers for next summer. For the first time, in nearly 2,000 years, visitors to Rome's Coliseum will be able to walk the same underground corridor once used as a secret passage for emperors. It's part of a new restoration that gives insight into those who ruled the Roman Empire. Megan Williams reports.
Starting point is 00:03:18 The underground passage of Commodus takes its name from one of Rome's most despised emperors, a ruler obsessed with gladiatorial combat. Federica Rinaldi oversaw the Commodus passage restoration, which she says was built so Roman emperors could enter the arena unseen by the crowds, protecting them from assassination. The passage also provided an element of drama, allowing an emperor to suddenly appear in his honor box overlooking the games. While most of the Coliseum was stripped of marble and decorative elements in the Renaissance. Remnants remain in this secret passage. The restoration included cleaning the frescoes,
Starting point is 00:03:59 reinforcing the vaults, and installing new lighting, says architect Angelica Puyall. The natural light used to seep through the holes on the ceiling.
