Starting point is 00:00:40 hurricane melissa is now roaring across eastern cuba hundreds of thousands of people have moved to higher ground and there's already reports of widespread flooding as for jamaica melissa arrived yesterday afternoon as a category five storm and this morning the damage is being assessed Katie Nicholson has more. Jamaica has felt the brunt of Melissa. Jamaica's Minister for Local Government, Desmond McKenzie, detailed the damage after Hurricane Melissa slammed into the island. We have reports coming out of Black River. Our number of families being trapped in their homes.
Starting point is 00:01:20 The fate of those families, not immediately clear, but much of the damage was. Electric poles ripped from the ground. landslides and floodwaters closed roads. Just a year ago, Hurricane Beryl badly hit the same area, and it was just recovering. Brian Bogart is with the World Food Program standing by to help. You can only imagine how difficult it will be for them.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Melissa was a historic Category 5 storm for Jamaica. It will likely be days before Jamaica fully knows the extent of Melissa's damage, the most powerful and violent storm in its history. Katie Nicholson, CBC News, Toronto. Palestinian officials say 104 people have been killed following a series of Israeli air strikes on Gaza. Israel says the strikes are in response to Hamas violating the ceasefire. Crystal Comancing has more now from Jerusalem. Gaza City was the first hit Tuesday night.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Palestinian Red Crescent workers were filmed searching the rubble. One woman was carried out to the street on a stretcher. At a hospital in Han Yunus, the dead are unloaded, followed by a flood of grief. Two older women fold over a gurney grasping at a body wrapped in a white shroud. U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking on board Air Force One, said the ceasefire is not at risk. They killed in an Israeli soldier, so the Israelis hit back, and they should hit back. Johan Feldbaum, a 37-year-old reservist was killed in Rafa Tuesday, inside Israeli. held territory. It's the second deadly attack on Israelis in the south during the ceasefire.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Hamas is accused in both attacks, but denies any involvement. Crystal Gamansing, CBC News, Jerusalem. The Bank of Canada makes its October interest rate setting this morning, with most analysts expecting to see another rate cut. But as we hear now from Peter Armstrong, the central bank continues to insist that it will take more than falling interest rates to boost economic growth. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklam has made it clear. There's only so much the central bank can do to help Canada get out of the current crisis. While monetary policy can't offset the negative effects of tariffs, positive structural
Starting point is 00:03:38 reform could. Interest rates may lessen the burden for households and businesses, but Macklems says what's needed now is fiscal policy, the building of major infrastructure projects to help diversify the Canadian economy. We could have done this without U.S. tariffs. of incomes and growth now makes this all the more imperative. All the more imperative, because even if Canada has avoided an outright recession, Desjardins, Deputy Chief Economist Randall Bartlett, says the economy is only forecast to
Starting point is 00:04:08 grow by a tiny amount. So the Canadian economy is quite weak. So he says the bank will likely cut rates this morning, but also make it clear it's waiting to see where and how aggressively the federal government spends in next week's budget.
