Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. We start with baseball and following yet another win last night in Los Angeles. The Toronto Blue Jays return home just one victory away now from winning this year's World Series. And the city and the country are ready. It's written in the stars, right? A game six back in Toronto, Halloween night.
Starting point is 00:00:58 It's just a history in the making. Me and all my friends, we have like a group chat, and we're just messaging each other every day going, oh, my gosh, we're almost there. I was skeptical at first, but, you know, the Blue Jays have had their drought. Let's bring it home. In game five, the Jays beat the Dodgers last night, 6-1 to take a 3-2 series lead. So game 6 goes tomorrow night at Rogers Center. Game 7, if needed, is set for Saturday. Ahead of tomorrow's opening of the Apex Summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney is in South Korea.
Starting point is 00:01:28 And today, among other items on his agenda, Carney was shopping for submarines. Murray Brewster reports. The Prime Minister was given a tour of a brand new KSS3 submarine. Built for the Korean Navy launched a few days ago. The kind Hanwa Ocean wants to sell to Canada. The company has been fairly aggressive. It got to be one of the two preferred bidders by submitting a detailed $20 to $24 billion unsolicited proposal to the federal government just before last spring's election.
Starting point is 00:01:56 South Korea put political weight behind the bid. The country's prime minister accompanied Mark Carney on the visit to the sprawling naval facility. There's one submarine in the water, and today it was flying a Canadian flag. Another is up on the skids in a construction shed. It's a not-so-sustle demonstration by the Koreans that their production lines are active, and they can deliver four submarines to Canada by 2035, the Navy's deadline to retire the old Victoria-class boats. Carney's visit is also significant because it's a sign the federal government wants to be.
Starting point is 00:02:26 to move swiftly towards a decision. Marie Rooster, CBC News, Cojay, South Korea. Latest figures are showing Canada's tourism industry is coming off a record-breaking summer. Hotels, attractions, and tour operators all had their busiest season ever, with revenues hitting an all-time high. Kyle Bax has more.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Brent Coinberg can finally catch his breath. He offers travelers guided ATV and other tours through the mountains in Southwest Albuquer. The tourism summer was really good for me. Business was booming, quadruple the number of customers, nearly half were international. He's not alone, as it was a banner year across the country. New figures from Destination Canada estimate record high revenue for the tourism industry this past summer, nearly $60 billion, up 6% compared to last year. For Coinberg, it exceeded expectations.
Starting point is 00:03:25 It was unbelievable. I've got a lot of families booked for next year already. Not only were more Canadians spending their travel dollars within the country, but revenue by international travelers was also up. Kyle Bax, CBC News, Calgary. The federal government is looking to crack down on trucking companies that misclassify their drivers as independent contractors. It allows employers to dodge their tax obligations
Starting point is 00:03:50 while depriving workers of benefits and pensions. It's an issue the government says it will be addressing a next week's budget. Here's Jobs Minister, Patty Haydu. The reality is that when people are being misused or abused in this way, and some could call this abuse, oftentimes they are unaware of their rights, and they're unaware of the fact that this is happening to them. The budget will be setting aside money to help the Canada Revenue Agency address non-compliance issues. As the government shutdown in Washington enters its fifth week, New York State is looking to fill the gaps for those who have lost their benefit programs. Governor Kathy Hokel has declared a state of emergency
Starting point is 00:04:28 and is offering $65 million in funding to food banks across the state. Support comes as a federal food stamp program is set to lapse on Saturday. It's estimated that across the country, more than 40 million Americans are on some form of food assistance. And that is the world this hour. For news any time, go to our website. We're at cBCNews.ca.
