Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. borough.ca. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Angie Seth. Prince Andrew will no longer be addressed as prince. King Charles issued a statement saying his brother will, from now on, be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. Andrew had already been stripped of his titles, including Duke of York. The statement goes on to say he will be moving out of Royal Lodge on the grounds of Windsor
Starting point is 00:00:54 Castle and into private accommodations. The Canadian Armed Forces apologized today for racial discrimination and racial harassment. An admission was directed to current and past members of the forces. David Thurton has more. The Royal Canadian Navy Policy, I quote, all applicants had to belong to the white race. Before the apology, retired Captain Kevin Jr. gave a brief history of racism in the Canadian Armed Forces. In the modern era, discriminatory.
Starting point is 00:01:27 policies were formally, formally abolished, but racism persisted in practice. Indignities of the past, but also the present, prompted today's ceremony. Speaking personally what I have learned has broken my heart. General Jenny Carillon, the chief of the defense staff, delivered the apology. I apologize to every CAF member, veteran who experienced racism, discrimination, and her harassment. Karen Yaw said what she heard has filled her with anger and sadness. David Thurton, CBC News, Ottawa. Ottawa is giving Caribbean countries $7 million in humanitarian aid following Hurricane Melissa. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. We, of course, are standing ready
Starting point is 00:02:18 24-7 to assist in ways that are requested. The Category 5 storm ravaged much of Jamaica. Cruise are clearing roads for emergency vehicles and evacuating residents still in danger. Jamaica Information Minister Dana Morris says at least five people are dead and there could well be more. We get a lot of reports about potential bodies. We're not sure. They have to verify this. And so we have a helicopter that's been dedicated that is going to be doing that really,
Starting point is 00:02:51 really very difficult work. Melissa is currently a category one storm and heading towards Bremen. The U.S. President says plans to test American nuclear weapons will get underway immediately. Donald Trump says that's because Russia and China are catching up. We have more than anybody. But I see them testing. I say, well, negative testing is we have to test. Trump says nuclear weapons will be tested on an equal basis with Russia and China. It has been nearly three decades since a military superpower last conducted a known nuclear weapons test. The latest U.S. directive has raised fears it will trigger another nuclear arms race.
Starting point is 00:03:31 And it comes as Russia tested a nuclear-capable missile and a nuclear-powered torpedo earlier this week. A Newfoundland mother is making a desperate plea to get her daughter back. Boucher says the girl was abducted by her father and taken to Egypt, despite a non-removal order from the courts. Ariana Kelland has that story. I miss her voice. Boucher Marbuhee hasn't seen. or heard from her daughter since September 26th. Her estranged husband, Ahmed Elgamal,
Starting point is 00:04:01 took the girl for a sleep over that night and didn't bring her back. El Gamal texted Marbuhi to say he took the girl back to his home country of Egypt. That's despite a family court non-removal order to prevent something like this from happening. That's non-removal order gave me a false sense of safety. The Royal Newfoundland instabulary issued an arrest warrant for El Gamal yesterday. on a charge of parental abduction contrary to a court order. Federal justice officials say Canada does not have an extradition treaty with Egypt. Marbuhe has asked for a wellness check on her daughter,
Starting point is 00:04:38 but has not received any reassurances yet that she's safe. I just want her back. Arianna Kelland, CBC News, St. John's. And that is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Angie Seth. Thank you.
