Starting point is 00:00:42 the last time that happened in the u.s was in 1992 and there's concern it could unravel decades of progress and usher in a new nuclear era paul hunter reports from washington mr president why did you change your nuclear plan at the outset of his down in South Korea with China's president, the U.S. president did not answer that question, though just prior to the meeting, he'd posted his intentions. Because of other countries' testing programs, he wrote, I have instructed the U.S. Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis. With others doing testing, I think it's appropriate that we do also. On his flight back to the U.S., Trump reiterated his view, the move is driven by other nuclear powers. say, well, they're going to test, I guess we have to test.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Though Russia has recently tested nuclear-capable missiles and China has expanded its nuclear stockpile, neither country has tested an actual nuclear weapon in decades. The U.S., Russia, and China long ago signed a treaty banning such tests, though the treaty was never ratified into law. Paul Hunter, CBC News, Washington. Palestinian militants have handed the Red Cross two more coffins, containing the remains of dead hostages from the Gaza Strip. So far, 15 bodies have been returned.
Starting point is 00:02:02 13 others still need to be found. In exchange, Israel had freed hundreds of Palestinians who were being detained. Dozens of high school students across Alberta walked out of class today in support of their teachers. They joined protests against Daniel Smith's governments back-to-work legislation and the use of the notwithstanding clause. Aaron Collins says more. Just one day after returning to class, thousands of Alberta students are out of school again, protesting the law that forced their teachers back to work.
Starting point is 00:02:36 It is my final year in high school. It's what is essential that we fight back now. Calgary and Aria Mishra is one of the founders of students for teachers, the group that organized dozens of walkouts across the province, pushing for caps on class sizes and more help for students with complex needs. Students understand this directly affects us, and education is a priority to us all. Grade 11 student Mari Webb walked out of her high school in Lethbridge, upset with the government's handling of the teacher's strike.
Starting point is 00:03:05 It'll show the public and other parents, maybe people who don't even have kids, how important teachers' rights are to us. The province used the notwithstanding clause to prevent teachers from challenging the constitutionality of its back-to-work law. Erin Collins, CBC News, Calgary. Fans are buzzing and anticipating. as the Toronto Blue Jays look for one more win to claim the World Series title for the first time in more than 30 years. The Jays lead the best of seven series against the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2,
Starting point is 00:03:35 and they play in front of a sold-out hometown crowd at the Rogers Center tomorrow. Manager John Schneider says it's been incredible to have the fans of, excuse me, the support of fans watching from the stadium and cross Canada. I can't wait to see what this place is like tomorrow. You know, watching it from on video from across the country with the people here watching. Watching. Never seen anything like that. Never seen a watch party like that. So I'm just, I'm excited as hell to see what this place is like tomorrow. The guys are too. They're talking about it as well. We kind of want the game to start right now. Game 7 is set for Saturday if they needed. Sellers is back again. The department store reopened Thursday at a mall in Edmonton. The company that purchased the seller's trademark from Hudson's Bay describes it as a soft launch. It says it aims to revive the charm and nostalgia Canadian's known love with a mall. modern, smaller department store concept. Alan DeLorey was among the first shoppers to check it out.
Starting point is 00:04:29 It is a little different because it's mainly clothes here. Before in Zellers used to have different things in that. They have a little section from kids in that. But as far as the two Zellers, the Zellar from before to now, like I said, just a little different. But I mean, it's still, it's great to have back here. Zellers is expected to announce other new locations across the country in the spring. That is the world this hour.
