Starting point is 00:00:42 donald trump says that's because russia and china are catching up we have more than anybody but i see them testing they say well they're going to testing as we have to test trump says nuclear weapons will be tested on an equal basis with Russia and China. It's been nearly three decades since a military superpower last conducted a known nuclear weapons test. The latest U.S. directive has raised fears it will trigger another nuclear arms race, and it comes as Russia tested a nuclear-capable missile and a nuclear-powered torpedo earlier this week. Horific scenes are emerging from Sudan's Darfur region. There are new calls for urgent intervention in the country's civil war. The Battleground City of Elfashir fell to paramilitary fighters over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Residents fled in droves in a bid to escape the sprawling conflict. Margaret Evans reports. The head of the paramilitary rapid support forces, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalow, has delivered a video message urging those who have left the city to return. He also promised to arrest people committing what he called violations. The investigation committee will start immediately, he said, and hold accountable any soldier or officer who committed a crime. That pledge will have little weight.
Starting point is 00:02:04 The war between Dago and Sudan's armed forces has killed an estimated 150,000 people since 2023. Can anyone here say that we did not know this was coming? The UN's humanitarian and emergency relief coordinator, Tom Fletcher, had some pointed remarks. Stop arming this violence. He stopped short of naming the UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, all accused of backing one side or the other.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Margaret Evans, CBC News, London. The Canadian Armed Forces officially apologized Thursday for the service's history of racism and discrimination. Chief of the defense staff, General Jenny Karinan, deared up as she delivered an emotional speech, apologizing to every armed forces member, past and present, who has experienced discrimination. On behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces, I offer my most sincere and deepest apologies.
Starting point is 00:03:03 And I acknowledge we failed you. Korea-Anon renewed the force's commitment to address biases at every level of the military service that will include ensuring an awareness of systemic racism in recruitment and training. In Victoria, BC, constructions begun on a new monument park. It will honor Japanese Canadians who were forcibly displaced or interned during the Second World War. Bisman Mugal has more. The park will be located on the outskirts of downtown Victoria, and at its center will be a wall with names honoring the 22,000 Japanese people who were displaced or interned.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Suzanne Tabata is the CEO of the Japanese Canadian Legacy Society and is helping with the park's development. This recognition of names is coming long after our elders have passed. However, descendants and survivors are really looking forward to seeing the recognition of a community of 22,000 individuals. MLA Kelly Green says this will allow British Colombians to confront a dark part of the province's history. Racism was at the root of why people were interred during the World War. Making sure that people understand and to commit to never doing it again is so important. The park is expected to be completed next fall. Bismamogal, CBC News, Vancouver.
