Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. borough.ca. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Faye. Game 7 of the World Series in Toronto had all the elements of a classic, but in the end did not go the way of the hometown Blue Jays or their fans. World Series could end on one swing in either direction. Home run wins it for the Blue Jays.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Ground ball wins it for the Dodgers. The Dodgers! stand tall and win back-to-back titles. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Jays 5, 4, and 11 innings to win the series in seven games. Here's Blue Jays manager, John Schneider. It's hard, you know. I had my first team meeting of the year after the game. There's so many things to unpack there, not just the series as a whole.
Starting point is 00:01:20 You know, seven games, two of them go to extras. I thought we played great baseball. I feel for the guys. You know what I mean? This is a special group of guys. That being said, I am so proud of them. Today, cross-country checkup is asking what did the Blue Jays World Series run mean to you and how do you bounce back after the defeat?
Starting point is 00:01:39 Go to CBC.ca.ca.com.com aircheck to share your story. Checkup airs on CBC radio and CBC News Network starting at 4 p.m. Eastern Time. Canada is the latest country to forge a military agreement with the Philippines as that country aims to counter China's assertiveness in the South China Sea. The agreement allows Canadian troops to participate in joint exercises on land as well as sea. Defense Minister David McGinty is in Manila to sign the deal on behalf of Canada. Peace is built on rules, not recklessness, and that stability grows from cooperation, not confrontation. In a statement, the Department of National Defense describes the Indo-Pacific region as the epicenter of a generational global shift, adding that every year,
Starting point is 00:02:27 issue that matters to Canadians will be shaped by developments in the region. The Philippines has already signed similar deals with New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, and Japan. Meanwhile, the U.S. has carried out another strike on an alleged drug trafficking boat in the Caribbean. Defense Secretary Pete Headsad says three men on board were killed, says the operation was directed by President Donald Trump and carried out in international waters. This is at least the 15th strike over the last two months against vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, killing more than 60 people. The U.S. is condemning the attacks, calling them extrajudicial killings. People in Jamaica are still reeling from Hurricane Melissa.
Starting point is 00:03:10 I wish I could explain the pain. The pain, I don't know. Your heart, stomach just burst. It's just too much. This woman fights back tears, as she describes, losing her home and belongings in Tuesday's storm that left a trail of destruction throughout the Caribbean region and at least 28 people dead. After a nine-day trip to Asia, Mark Carney faces his biggest test as Prime Minister this week. His government tables its first budget on Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:03:40 And with minority parliament, finding support from other parties may be difficult. The CBC's chief political correspondent, Rosemary Barton, has more. The Prime Minister made it clear yesterday before heading home from that trip to Asia that he is prepared to fight an election on this budget if needed. He also said that he believes this is the right budget for the country right now in a critical moment. But the budget is also going to be one with a very large deficit, anywhere between $70 to $100 billion, and cuts to the public service. So that's where Prime Minister Carney is going to run into some trouble, perhaps, because at this point, it's really unclear where he's going to find the support to pass the budget. Conservative leader Pierre Puehliev won't say whether his government will support the budget.
Starting point is 00:04:22 He's called on the Prime Minister to do certain things like scrap the industrial carbon tax. And here's a little more of what he told me. I don't have telepathic powers to tell you what's in it. If it were to bring down the cost of living, an affordable budget for an affordable living is something that I support. It does sound, though, that because he has criticized Mark Carney and the government's approach, it would be very unlikely for them to be able to support it. Rosemary Barton, CBC News, Ottawa. And that is your world this hour.
Starting point is 00:04:50 For CBC News, I'm Claw. fig.
