from cbc news the world this hour i'm gina louise phillips the u.s secretary of the treasury says the u.s government has not put an additional 10% tariff on canadian goods and services president donald trump said he would as a punishment for an ontario ad campaign that ad used clips of former u.s president ronald regan arguing against the use of trade barriers today secretary scott besant was
asked if Prime Minister Mark Carney's apology meant they would be lifted.
He hasn't put on a 10% tariff. He threatened to put on a 10%.
So he didn't actually do it?
It hasn't been put on yet. This is unacceptable.
The Premier of Ontario spent $75 million sending propaganda via our airwaves.
It's the equivalent of election interference.
The Trump administration claims former President Reagan was a fan of tariffs
when in fact he was a supporter of free trade.
After a nine-day trip to Asia, Mark Carney faces his biggest test as Prime Minister this week.
His government tables its first budget on Tuesday, and with minority parliament, finding support from other parties may be difficult.
Rosemary Barton has more.
The Prime Minister made it clear yesterday before heading home from that trip to Asia that he is prepared to fight an election on this budget if needed.
He also said that he believes this is the right budget for the country right now in a critical moment.
But the budget is also going to be one with a very large deficit, anywhere between $70 to $100 billion, and cuts to the public service.
So that's where Prime Minister Carney is going to run into some trouble, perhaps, because at this point, it's really unclear where he's going to find the support to pass the budget.
Conservative leader Pierre Puehliev won't say whether his government will support the budget.
He's called on the Prime Minister to do certain things like scrap the industrial carbon tax.
And here's a little more of what he told me.
I don't have telepathic powers to tell you what's in it.
if it were to bring down the cost of living,
an affordable budget for an affordable living is something that I support.
It does sound, though, that because he has criticized Mark Carney
and the government's approach, it would be very unlikely for them to be able to support it.

Canada is the latest country to forge a military agreement with the Philippines
as it tries to counter China's assertiveness in the South China Sea.
The agreement allows Canadian troops to participate in joint exercise
on land as well as sea. Defense Minister David McGinty is in Manila to sign the deal.
Peace is built on rules, not recklessness, and that stability grows from cooperation, not
confrontation. In a statement, the Department of National Defense describes the Indo-Pacific
region as the epicenter of a generational global shift. The Philippines has already signed
similar deals with New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, and Japan.
The city of Prince Rupert has issued another boil water notice, the third in the past year.
The city says the issue is a result of ongoing construction related to replacing its 100-year-old dam.
Residents are urged to boil water for at least one minute before drinking, cooking, or brushing their teeth with it.
Canadians can be excused for feeling a little bit blue today after the Toronto Blue Jays lost game seven to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
World Series could end on one swing in either direction.
Home run wins it for the Blue Jays.
Ground ball wins it for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers stand tall and win back-to-back titles.
Ouch.
The Dodgers beat the Jays 5'4 in 11 innings.
Jay's manager, John Schneider, says this.
It's hard, you know.
I had my first team meeting of the year after the game.
There's so many things to unpack there.
not just the series as a whole.
You know, seven games, two of them go to extras.
I thought we played great baseball.
I feel for the guys.
You know what I mean?
This is a special group of guys.
That being said, I am so proud of them.
Today, cross-country checkup is asking,
what did the Blue Jays World Series run mean to you?
And how do you bounce back after defeat?
