Starting point is 00:00:37 I'm Neil Hurland. Voters in Yukon have ousted the Liberals after nine years in power. The next premier of the Yukon, Mr. Curry Dixon. Last night, the conservative-leaning Yukon Party won a majority government in the territory, with 14 of the 21 seats in the legislature. Currie Dixon will be the first Yukon Premier born in the territory. The results of this election show very clearly that Yukoners want a change. They want a change to address our housing crisis.
Starting point is 00:01:11 They want our health care infrastructure to keep up with our population growth and our health system to meet the needs of all Yukoners, regardless of what community they live in. They've told us they want to see the downtown core of Whitehorse cleaned up and made safe. Kate White is leader of the Yukon NDP. Her party won six seats and moved the NDP from third party to official opposition. Now she's vowing to hold the government to its promises. Well, it's going to be to hold them to account, which is something that I have a fair amount of experience in. And so the reality is they've made commitments.
Starting point is 00:01:43 We know UConners are struggling with affordability, with access to health care, housing, education. There's a whole series of problems. And so that is what will make sure they deliver. The Liberals suffered a humiliating loss, only winning one seat. And for all the results from the Yukon election, click on our website, cbcnews.ca. Elections are being held across the U.S. today, and one of the most closely watched races is in New York City, where the former governor of New York State is running for mayor against a young Democratic socialist. Katie Nicholson has more.
Starting point is 00:02:19 New York City mayoral frontruner Zoron Mamdani on Monday. Our time has come, New York. Our time is now. Mamdani's time in particular appears to have come. The last four months, a wild ride from political outsider to ascendant contender, driven by a grassroots campaign and promises to tackle affordability. Trying to go through Mamdani like a hot knife through butter. And so, former New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, entered the race, contrasting himself with Mamdani's democratic socialism.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Republican Curtis Slewaw campaigned largely on public safety and as a man of the people. Like the TV program, everybody loves Raymond, everybody loves Curtis. This race is already making history. More than 735,000 lined up for early in-person voting, more than four times the number in the 2021 election. Katie Nicholson, CBC News, Washington. Prime Minister Mark Carney will deliver his first budget today, BC's hard-hit forestry sector is looking for a lifeline from the federal government
Starting point is 00:03:27 in the face of punishing U.S. tariffs on softwood lumber. As Katie DeRosa reports, the forestry sector is bigger than Canada's auto industry. We don't have a lot of time here. We're probably across the country closing it on 2,000 lost jobs. Derek Nyborg, President of the Forest Products Association of Canada, says he wants to see a federal budget that includes support for forestry workers and businesses. It's an industry that's been hammered by the 45% softwood lumber tariffs imposed by the U.S. Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned of a budget that will force Canadians to make sacrifices.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Those in BC's forestry sector say they've sacrificed enough. At a softwood summit yesterday in Vancouver, BC's Premier says he's now convinced Ottawa has made the industry a priority. It's larger than the automotive sector. It's larger than aluminum and steel combined. and it deserves to be treated with the seriousness and respect. David E.B. and Federal Minister for Canada-U.S. Trade, Dominic LeBlanc, committed to a new B.C. Ottawa Task Force to respond to punishing U.S. tariffs on lumber exports.
