Starting point is 00:00:53 was a towering political figure in washington following the attacks of nine eleven cheney oversaw the country's so-called war on terror and the invasion of Iraq. In recent years, however, Cheney turned away from the Republican Party and was publicly critical of Donald Trump, who Cheney called, quote, a coward and a threat to the republic. Dick Cheney was 84 years old. Now to Ottawa, where the liberal government tables its first budget today under Prime Minister Mark Carney. We will have to make some difficult choices, responsible choices. Federal government spending has grown massively over the last few years. That's not sustainable. It's Carney in a liberal ad hinting that spending cuts are on the way, that along with what the liberals
Starting point is 00:01:39 are calling generational investments in housing and infrastructure. In recent weeks, the opposition conservatives, the bloc, and the NDP have all been accusing the liberals of looking to trigger an election. The House vote on the budget is a confidence vote, which means if it doesn't get through, the liberal minority would fall and an election would follow. CBC, radio will have special coverage of today's budget rollout. Catherine Cullen from the House and Susan Bonner from This World Tonight are hosting. They took 14 of the
Starting point is 00:02:20 territory's 21 seats and Yukon now has a new premier. Nancy Thompson reports. They chose a new path. They chose change. Yukonners chose a strong majority Yukon Party government. 40-year-old Curry Dixon will be the first Yukon Premier to have been born in the territory. The Yukon Party
Starting point is 00:02:41 ran on a mantra of change, and voters here agreed. Yukoners have told us that they want to see this change, and the good news is that change is here. Dixon told the party faithful he'd use his solid majority to deal with the housing and health care crisis in the territory, and he
Starting point is 00:02:57 promised the right-leaning Yukon party would wean the Yukon off its over-reliance on government spending. And they've told us that we need to get our economy back on track to put growth of the private sector at the forefront of our agenda. The Yukon NDP doubled its seat counts to six. Liberal Premier Mike Pemberton in office for just five months lost his riding in a massive defeat, a clear repudiation of the liberal brand. Nancy Thompson, CBC News, Whitehorse. A number of elections are being held today across. the United States. And one of the most closely watched is the race for mayor in New York City. It has a former state governor up against a self-proclaimed democratic socialist. Katie Nicholson has more.
Starting point is 00:03:40 New York City mayoral frontrunner Zoron Mamdani on Monday. Our time has come, New York. Our time is now. Mamdani's time in particular appears to have come. The last four months, a wild ride from political outsider to ascendant contender. Driven by a grassroots campaign and promises to tackle affordability. Throwing to a go through Mamdani like a hot knife through butter. And so, former New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, entered the race, contrasting himself with Mamdani's Democratic socialism. Republican Curtis Slewa campaigned largely on public safety and as a man of the people.
