Canada's finance minister has high hopes and big promises ahead of the federal budget being tabled later today. Francois Philippe Champagne says the Carney government's plan ushers Canada into a new era. It contains what he calls generational investments
Starting point is 00:00:58 to spur domestic growth and reduce reliance on the U.S. The minority liberal government will need the support of at least three opposition members to get it passed. China says Canada is once again on the list of approved destinations for Chinese tour groups. The work that we've been doing to recalibrate the Canada-China relationship has been ongoing for some weeks. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says this is a sign both countries want to advance. their relationship. The move comes just days after Prime Minister Mark Carney met with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of a summit in South Korea. It was the first sit-down meeting between Canadian and Chinese leaders in eight years. Several challenges remain between the two countries.
Starting point is 00:01:45 During the leaders' debate in the spring, Carney described China as Canada's biggest foreign interference threat. And there are ongoing trade talks about Chinese tariffs on canola and beef products. Manitoba's Premier is facing criticism for condemning a recent Supreme Court ruling. Not only should go to prison for a long time, they should bury you under the prison. You shouldn't get protective custody. They should put you into general population, if you know what I mean. I don't think that's a sensible thing to say. Winnipeg defense lawyer Chris Gamby says Kanoon shouldn't encourage vigilante justice.
Starting point is 00:02:50 It would be good for the premier to have a bit more respect for the rule of law and for the court system. Canoe is a new Democrat, but he joined the leader of the federal opposition and other conservative premiers in calling on Ottawa to invoke the notwithstanding clause to overturn the ruling. Karen Paul's, CBC News, Winnipeg. Dick Cheney, the powerful but polarizing Republican vice president, has died. Cheney served under former president George W. Bush and is regarded as one of the most powerful VPs in U.S. history. He was a leading architect of the 2003. invasion of Iraq and the larger War on Terror that followed 9-11. In a statement today, Bush says Cheney will be remembered as one of the finest public servants of his generation.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Cheney was 84 years old. New York City picks a new mayor tonight. The election comes after months of contentious campaigning that has ignited a national debate. On the list of voter issues, cost of living, security, and immigration. Chris Reyes has more. Zoran Mamdani is the surprise frontrunner in the race to lead the largest city in the U.S. His matchup against the former governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has revved up voters. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers showed up early to cast their ballot.

Cuomo has been pitching his experience to take on President Donald Trump and run a city that's riddled with problems, from cost of living to safety in the streets. This is going to determine the future of the city of New York. Mamdani, a self-declared democratic socialist, is promising to lower the cost of living with free buses, no-cost child care, and government-run grocery stores. We are on the brink of making history in our city, on the brink of saying goodbye to a politics of the past.
