Starting point is 00:00:37 Mark Carney promised his first budget as Prime Minister would have ambitions to build big. And now it comes with a price tag. His economic plan is forecast to have a $78 billion deficit, while it also taps the brakes on spending. Karina Roman has more on the announcement. This is how we win. Starting point is 00:01:00 says the budget meets the moment. The world is undergoing a series of fundamental shifts at a speed, scale and scope not seen since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The budget includes $141 billion over five years in new spending and a $78 billion deficit this year. That deficit is projected to decline to the mid-50 range by 2030. The budget also includes 60 billion, dollars over five years in savings through cuts to the public service and government programs. Although existing social programs, such as child care and dental care, survive, and pharmacare won't be expanded beyond the provinces that currently have deals. Karina Roman, CBC News, Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:01:48 In the budget aftermath, a Nova Scotia MP is resigning from the Conservative Caucus and joining the Liberals. Chris Dantramont represents the riding of Akkadianapolis. He released a statement in the last. hour. In it, he says he's joining the Liberal Caucus to support the path promised in the new budget. Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, who served two terms under George W. Bush, has died at age 84. It happened last night from complications due to pneumonia and cardiac disease. Willie Lowry has more on how he'll be remembered. He is widely regarded as one of, if not the most
Starting point is 00:02:24 powerful vice presidents in U.S. history. He helped to steer the country out of the ashes of September 11th, he was a major proponent of the war on terror and the invasion of Iraq, a move he defended long after it was proven that there were no weapons of mass destruction to find. A suggestion that's been made by some U.S. centers that the president of the United States or any member of this administration purposely misled the American people on pre-war intelligence is one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city. His career, though, was not limited to the vice presidency. He served in various positions under multiple presidents,
Starting point is 00:03:05 including as White House Chief of Staff and as Secretary of Defense. In a statement, the former president, George W. Bush, said Cheney's death was, quote, a loss to the nation. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. New York City picks a new mayor tonight. The election comes after months of contentious campaigning that has ignited a national debate. on the list of voter issues, cost of living, security, and immigration. Chris Reyes has more. Zoran Mamdani is the surprise frontrunner in the race to lead the largest city in the U.S.
Starting point is 00:03:39 His matchup against the former governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has revved up voters. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers showed up early to cast their ballot. We're all for Mandami, all ages. Tell us why you're voting for Cuomo. I think he's confident. Cuomo has been pitching his experience to take on President Donald Trump. and run a city that's riddled with problems, from cost of living to safety in the streets. This is going to determine the future of the city of New York.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Mamdani, a self-declared democratic socialist, is promising to lower the cost of living with free buses, no-cost child care, and government-run grocery stores. We are on the brink of making history in our city, on the brink of saying goodbye to a politics of the past. Polls close at 9 p.m. Eastern. Chris Reyes. New York. An avalanche in Nepal has killed at least seven climbers, including a Canadian, according to officials. The slide hit the base camp of a Himalayan peak near the border with China.
