From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. Mark Carney promised his first budget as
Prime Minister would have ambitions to build big, and now it comes with a price tag. His budget
is forecast this year to have a 78 billion dollar deficit. As Karina Roman reports, it also
includes some cuts. This is how we win. This is how we keep winning, Mr. Spie.
Finance Minister Francois Philippe Champagne says the budget meets the moment.
The world is undergoing a series of fundamental shifts at a speed, scale and scope not seen since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The budget includes $141 billion over five years in new spending and a $78 billion deficit this year.
That deficit is projected to decline to the mid-50 range by 2030.
budget also includes $60 billion over five years in savings through cuts to the public service
and government programs. Although existing social programs, such as child care and dental care,
survive, and pharmacare won't be expanded beyond the provinces that currently have deals.

In the budget aftermath, the Nova Scotia MP is resigning from the Conservative Caucus and
crossing the floor to join the Liberals.

He released a statement tonight.
It says he's joining the Liberal Caucus to support the path promised in the new budget.
A 34-year-old Muslim immigrant, born in Africa, will be the next mayor of New York City.
Tonight, voters in the Big Apple elected Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who's promising to make New York more affordable.

not of a campaign. The working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected
that power does not belong in their hands. Zoran Mamdani with a fiery speech. Over the last
12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater. The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist
rapidly ascended to mayor-elect on promises to make life in New York more affordable,
free buses, child care, rent freezes, and government-run grocery store.
This race, seen by some as a barometer reading, one year after voters elected Donald Trump
to a second term in the Oval Office, and one year before, the crucial midterm elections.
Trump injected himself into the New York race.
He endorsed former governor Andrew Cuomo, a longtime Democrat,
and suggested he would pull federal funding from the city if Mamdani won.

won elections for governor in New Jersey and Virginia. And in California, voters passed a ballot
measure to change the U.S. congressional districts in a way that favored the Democratic Party.
The move comes in response to a similar move by Texas Republicans to draw themselves a map

Witnesses watch and horror as a UPS cargo plane crashes and explodes into a
a massive fireball. Video shows flames on the plane's left wing and a trail of smoke just before

At approximately 5.14 p.m. Eastern time tonight, UPS flight 2976 from Louisville, Kentucky to
Honolulu, Hawaii, an MD 11 with three crew members on board, was involved in a catastrophic crash
here in Louisville adjacent to our airport.
