Starting point is 00:00:46 but before the back and forth starts the conservatives will have to deal with the loss of one of their MPs who is now a liberal janice mcgregor reports chris don't tremor appears to have time his announcement to inflict maximum political damage, just as the budget was about to be read in the House of Commons, pulling the opposition leader out of his seat to deal with it and overshadowing, essentially drowning out to anything else, conservatives had to say, critiquing the budget itself for the rest of the evening. Meanwhile, both Prime Minister Mark Carney and Finance Minister Francois-Ferl-Philippe Champagne will be out today selling a budget that looks years down the road at a crisis that's happening now. Peter Armstrong reports.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Mr. Speaker, the budget I present today comes at the time of profound change. In the House of Commons, finance minister Francois Philippe Champagne lays out the plan his government is crafted to help the economy not just survive the tariff crisis, but to thrive in spite of it. Businesses are being asked to bet big on the liberal promise to get Canadian products to market. The budget is meant to buy time, time for these measures to be implemented and take shape, but the damage being done to the economy is happening in real time. Sahir Khan, Vice President of the Institute of Fiscal Studies and Democracy at the University of Ottawa says the clock is ticking.
Starting point is 00:02:40 And I don't think these measures are really going to kick in in the short term. It's about confidence in the short term, but the results of a major capital strategy and defense strategy are going to be felt over decades. And therein lies the hard part. Can the economy keep its head above water long enough for the budget and its changes to start playing out? Peter Armstrong, CBC News, Toronto. The U.S. Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments today about the legality of Donald Trump's tariffs and whether the American president is overstepping his authority.
Starting point is 00:03:09 In the arguments against the Trump action, the court will be hearing that under the Constitution, only Congress has the power to implement tariffs. Still in the U.S., voters in New York City have elected a new mayor. He is 34-year-old Solan Mondami. Katie Nicholson has a details. A triumphant end to a juggernaut. of a campaign. This race, seen by some as a barometer reading, one year after voters elected Donald Trump to a second term in the Oval Office and one year before the crucial midterm elections. Trump injected himself into the New York race. He endorsed former governor Andrew Cuomo, a longtime Democrat, and suggested he would pull federal funding from the city if Mamdani won. Katie Nicholson, CBC News, Washington. Gwen's last night for the Democrats, Democrats elsewhere across the U.S. The campaigns for governor in both Virginia and New Jersey were both won by Democrats.

It allows the state to redraw its district maps, which will most likely offset similar congressional changes the Republicans put in place in Texas. And that is the world this hour.
