Starting point is 00:00:38 From CBC News, The World This Hour. I'm Kate McGilvery. Newly minted Liberal MP Chris Dantremant says he hasn't felt in line with the conservative leader for months. Dantremant crossed the floor to join the Liberal Caucus yesterday, and this morning he was welcomed warmly by Liberal MPs. Karina Roman has more. Liberal MPs cheer Chris Dantremant at his first Liberal caucus. At an earlier news conference, Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced him. As the newest member of our government caucus.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Carney says he appreciates Dantraman joining the government caucus at what Carney says is a crucial time for the country. Dantraman framed his decision as something he is doing for his riding and constituents. To solve the issues that are important to our communities, and I didn't see it by sitting in the opposition. Don Tremant says he was at odds with the leadership style of Pierre Paulyev, and he did not deny that there are perhaps other conservative MPs considering the same thing. But I will let them tell their stories if that time goes.
Starting point is 00:01:43 The Liberals now need only two MPs from other parties to either vote for or abstain to pass the budget. Karina Roman, CBC News, Ottawa. A fish plant in St. Mary's Newfoundland was destroyed by a fire over night. It happened at the height of a powerful storm that brought hurricane force winds. Sherry Gambin Walsh represents the area in the Newfoundland and Labrador Assembly. I'm heartbroken. I really truly am. I was speaking to the mayor a couple of times in the last hour. The town is devastated. They're just standing there watching their source of employment just go to the ground. The St. Mary's Fish Plant was one of the area's biggest employers
Starting point is 00:02:22 with more than 300 workers. In New York. The poetry of campaigning may have come to a close last night at 9, but the beautiful prose of governing has only just begun. The city's new mayor elect Sorin Mamdani says he's at work on the transition to office. He campaigned on making New York more affordable, promising things like free city buses and child care. Donald Trump vowed to make life difficult for the city if they elected Mom Dani. For his part, Mom Dani says it will be important not to blame the Trump administration for the city's problems. Many of the issues we are speaking about predate President Trump. They are issues that for too long we have turned a blind eye to
Starting point is 00:03:01 or we have sought to rationalize or normalize. Mamdani will be sworn into office on January 1st. Several people were injured when a man rammed his car into crowds on an island off of France's Atlantic coast. As Dominic Philitis tells us, the motive for this attack still isn't known. Officials say the attack on Oleron Island off the Atlantic coast lasted 35 minutes. Five people were wounded when the suspect deliberately drove into pedestrians and cyclists. France's interior minister, Laurent Nunez, visited the scene earlier. Two people are critically injured, he says, including a 22-year-old woman who suffered multiple traumas.
Starting point is 00:03:47 The suspect, who reportedly shouted God is greatest in Arabic when arrested by police, is a 35-year-old local. One French newspaper says investigators are looking into whether he may be mentally disturbed. He was not on a watch list of radicalized individuals. Dominic Vlysis for CBC News, Bristol, England. France has started proceedings. Does suspend the Chinese online fashion giant, Xi'in, after it was caught selling childlike sex dolls and weapons on its website.
Starting point is 00:04:17 The news comes on the day that Sheehan opened its first real-world shop inside of a Paris department store. pitcher Shane Bieber has decided to stick with the Toronto Blue Jays. He chose to exercise his player option and stay on the team for the 2026 season rather than become a free agent. He will be paid $16 million U.S. dollars for that. And Prince Harry arrives in Toronto today for a two-day visit. He'll attend a fundraiser for the British charity, the Halo Trust, which helps clear explosives and landmines, a cause his mother, Princess Diana, also championed.
