Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Sarah Marshall, and there's one story from the past that I've been circling around for years now. This eight-part series traces the hidden history of the satanic panic in North America. We'll connect the dots from Victoria, BC, to the backroads of Kentucky. Satan was having a moment, the sensationalist heartthrob of our time. The Devil You Know, available now wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McIlfrey. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it has completed a cull of about 300 ostriches on a BC farm.
Starting point is 00:00:44 It says they were killed by the most humane method available, marksmen, in a controlled setting. This looks like the final chapter in what's been a prolonged battle over the fate of these birds. The call was originally ordered last December during an avian flu outbreak, but the farm owners went to court hoping to block it. That legal back and forth ended yesterday when the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal. CFIA has requested the RCMP stay on site at the farm, all the agency disposes of the ostrich remains.
Starting point is 00:01:14 The fallout over a conservative MP's resignation continues today. A senior liberal source confirms Matt Jenneru met with the Prime Minister earlier this week. Now, senior conservatives are facing tough questions about how they lost two MPs ahead of a high-stakes budget vote. David Thurton has more. Matt Jenneru met with the Prime Minister. Did Matt Jennery?
Starting point is 00:01:37 Amid rumors about him crossing the floor? Sir, did Matt Jenneros? Andrew Shear, the Conservative House leader, dismissing reports about one of his MPs. CBC News has confirmed Matt Jenneru met with the Prime Minister, Mark Carney. But he didn't cross the floor like conservative-turned-liberal-Mpe, Chris Dantramon,
Starting point is 00:01:55 Instead, announcing he will resign as an MP. I take Matt General at his word. I do not take unnamed liberal sources at the word. I don't respond to rumors. But the questions continue about why General resigned and why he asked in his resignation letter that people not contact his family. NDP. MP Gore-Johns.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Well, I think any time somebody puts out a letter saying, you know, to leave my family alone, and when I think there's a lot of questions that they need to answer. John said it's heartbreaking to see Jenna Rugo. David Thurton, CBC News, Ottawa. Canada's unemployment rate dropped to 6.9% from 7.1 in September. Statistics Canada also says the economy added more than 67,000 new jobs last month. These numbers are better than most economists expected.
Starting point is 00:02:46 It is the second month in a row. We've seen an increase in hiring across the country. Hundreds of flights are canceled across the U.S. today, many more delayed. Flight reductions began this morning due to the government shutdown. Unpaid air traffic controllers are increasingly calling in sick or being forced to take on a second job. Willie Lowry reports from Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. A travel day that many Americans were dreading. At Reagan National Airport, at least 18 flights were canceled as the Federal Aviation Administration looks for ways to reduce the workload on
Starting point is 00:03:22 unpaid and understaffed air traffic controllers. Traveler Mike Kamen anticipates the situation will only get worse in the coming days. It's going to be chaos I expect in Newark. And it will be here shortly. So keep your sense of humor. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the cancellations were a last resort and blamed Democrats for the government shutdown. Any end in sight? That's a question for Democrats. If Democrats are going to go home this weekend and they've kept the government shut down, that's shameful. Duffy says even if the shutdown ends, he doesn't expect travel to bounce back immediately. The FAA will ramp up flight reductions across the country, starting at 4% for now,
Starting point is 00:04:03 and hitting 10% by next Friday. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. And Denmark will become the first country in Europe to ban children from using social media. We're standing in a situation in Denmark where far too many young people, thought too many children are having a profile on a big social media platform. Denmark's Minister for Digital Affairs, Carolyn Olson, says the age minimum will be set at 15 for certain social media platforms. She didn't specify which ones or how those restrictions will be enforced. This announcement follows a similar move by Australia.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Its parliament enacted the world's first ban on social media for children under 16, set to start next month. And that is Your World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilvery.
