Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Sarah Marshall, and there's one story from the past that I've been circling around for years now. This eight-part series traces the hidden history of the satanic panic in North America. We'll connect the dots from Victoria, BC, to the backroads of Kentucky. Satan was having a moment, the sensationalist heartthrob of our time. The Devil You Know, available now wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McGilfrey. The liberal government has survived another confidence vote in Parliament.
Starting point is 00:00:40 MPs voted overwhelmingly against a Block Quebecois amendment to the federal budget. It called for the budget to be rejected on the basis that it is, quote, harmful to Quebec. Yesterday, MPs defeated a similar budget motion from the conservatives. This doesn't mean the budget itself has passed, with that vote expected later this month. Meanwhile, senior conservatives on the Hill are facing some tough questions about how they lost two MPs ahead of that high-stakes budget vote. David Thurton has more. Matt Jenner-Rue met with the Prime Minister.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Did Matt Jennery? Amid rumors about him crossing the floor? Andrew Shear, the Conservative House Leader, dismissing reports about one of his MPs. CBC News has confirmed Matt Jeneru met with the Prime Minister, Mark Carney. But he didn't cross the floor like conservative-turned-liberal MP, Chris Dantramal. Instead, announcing he will resign as an MP. I take Matt General at his word. I do not take unnamed liberal sources of the word. I don't respond to rumors.
Starting point is 00:01:40 But the questions continue about why General resigned and why he asked in his resignation letter that people not contact his family, NDPMP Gore-John's. Well, I think any time somebody puts out a letter saying, leave my family alone, there's a lot of questions that they need to answer. John said, it's heartbreaking to see General go. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it has now completed a call of about 300 ostriches on a British Columbia farm. It says they were killed by the most humane method available, marksman, in a controlled setting. This looks like the final chapter in what has been a prolonged battle over the fate of these birds.
Starting point is 00:02:19 The call was originally ordered last December during an avian flu outbreak, but the farm owners went to court hoping to block it. That legal back and forth ended yesterday when the Supreme Court. refused to hear an appeal. The CFIA has requested that the RCMP stay on site while the agency disposes of the ostrich remains. Belgium is weighing countermeasures to alleged national security threats by Russia. Dron sightings disrupted flights at two airports in the country overnight, and for the first time Sweden was also forced to shut its airspace due to drones. And Cunningham has more. The number of drone sightings reported at airports across Europe recently.
Starting point is 00:02:58 is on the rise. Overnight, both Belgium and Sweden faced disruption from drones described as of unknown origin. The German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius believes there is a direct link with Russia and a planned EU loan to Ukraine that could be funded by frozen Russian assets. We all see it that way and so do the Belgians, says Pistorius. Frozen Russian assets are held worldwide, including in Canada. The historian says the drone sightings are designed to create uncertainty and fear in Belgium. Russia has not commented. The Belgian government is considering a multi-million dollar package of measures
Starting point is 00:03:41 that it says will strengthen the country's anti-dron systems. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. Denmark will become the first country in Europe to ban children from using social media. We're standing in a situation in Denmark where far too many young people, thought too many children are having a profile on a big social media platform. Denmark's Minister for Digital Affairs, Carolyn Olson, says the age minimum will be set at 15 for certain social media platforms. She didn't specify which ones or how these restrictions will be enforced. This announcement follows a similar move made by Australia.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Its Parliament enacted the world's first ban on social media for children under 16, set to start next month. And James Watson, who co-discovered the double helix structure of DNA, has died. Chicago-born Watson was just 24 when he made that discovery, together with Francis Crick, in 1953. It helped spearhead a revolution in medicine, crime-fighting, genealogy, and ethics. Watson was 97 years old. That is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilfrey. Thank you.
