Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Sarah Marshall, and there's one story from the past that I've been circling around for years now. This eight-part series traces the hidden history of the satanic panic in North America. We'll connect the dots from Victoria, BC, to the backroads of Kentucky. Satan was having a moment, the sensationalist heartthrob of our time. The Devil You Know, available now wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McGilfrey. The liberal government has survived another confidence vote in Parliament.
Starting point is 00:00:40 MPs voted overwhelmingly against a Block Quebequa amendment to the federal budget. It called for the budget to be rejected on the basis that it is, quote, harmful to Quebec. Yesterday, MPs defeated a similar budget motion from the conservatives. This doesn't mean the budget itself has passed, with that vote expected to happen later this month. Meanwhile, senior conservatives on the Hill are facing some tough questions about how they lost two MPs ahead of a high-stakes budget vote. David Thurton has more. Matt Jennero met with the Prime Minister.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Did Matt Jennery? Amid rumors about him crossing the floor? Andrew Shear, the Conservative House leader, dismissing reports about one of his MPs. CBC News has confirmed Matt Jenneroo met with the Prime Minister, Mark Carney. But he didn't cross the floor like conservative-turned liberal MP, Chris Dantraman, instead announcing he will resign as an MP. I take Matt General at his word.
Starting point is 00:01:36 I do not take unnamed liberal sources of the word. I don't respond to rumors. But the questions continue about why General resigned and why he asked in his resignation letter that people not contact his family. NDP.M.P. Gorge Johns. Well, I think any time somebody puts out a letter saying, leave my family alone,
Starting point is 00:01:54 there's a lot of questions that they need to answer. John said, it's heartbreaking to see Jeneru go. David Thurton, CBC News, Ottawa. It also triggered large-scale power outages, affecting over a million people. Authorities warned more rainfall could trigger flooding and landslides.
Starting point is 00:02:21 This typhoon had already brought devastation to the Philippines earlier this week, killing nearly 190 people there. Belgium is weighing countermeasures to alleged national security threats from Russia. Drone sightings disrupted flights at two airports in the country overnight, part of a string of drone incidents affecting airports in a number of European countries recently. For the first time this week, an airport in Sweden was also hit with a drone scare, and at Cunningham has more. The number of drone sightings reported at airports across Europe recently is on the rise.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Overnight, both Belgium and Sweden faced disruption from drones described us of unknown origin. The German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius believes there is a direct link with Russia and a planned EU loan to Ukraine that could be funded by frozen Russian assets. We all see it that way and so do the Belgians, says Pistorius. Frozen Russian assets are held worldwide, including in Canada. The historian says the drone sightings are designed to create uncertainty and fear in Belgium. Russia has not commented.
Starting point is 00:03:35 The Belgian government is considering a multi-million dollar package of measures that it says will strengthen the country's anti-dron systems. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it has completed a call of about 300 ostriches on a BC farm. It says they were killed by the most humane. method available, marksman in a controlled setting. This looks like the final chapter in what has been a prolonged battle over the fate of these birds. The call was originally ordered last December during an avian flu outbreak, but the farm owners went to court hoping to block it. That legal
Starting point is 00:04:12 back and forth ended yesterday when the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal. The CFIA has requested that the RCMP stay on site while the agency disposes of the ostrich remains. And, James Watson, who co-discovered the double helix structure of DNA, has died. Chicago-born Watson was just 24 when he made the discovery, together with Francis Crick, in 1953. It's a finding that helped spearhead a revolution in medicine, crime-fighting, genealogy, and ethics. Watson was 97 years old. And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilfrey.
