Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Mike Miles. Federal Liberals insist this week's budget protects vital services like Pharmacare. But health care advocates point out there's no additional funding to expand federal parma care to more provinces. In fact, it'd leave millions of patients paying out of pocket. Marina von Stackleberg has more. There's now a huge disparity in Canadians' ability to access life-saving and life-changing
Starting point is 00:00:57 medicine, and that's fundamentally unacceptable. Teal Phelps Bondaroff wants Ottawa to follow through on its promise, to make contraceptive and diabetes drugs free for all Canadians. He's with Access BC, a grassroots group that lobbies for pharmacare in British Columbia. BC, Manitoba, PEI, and Yukon all cut deals with the federal government to pay for those medications before the spring election. But since then, there's been no new agreements. and more than half the $1.5 billion set aside has already been spent.
Starting point is 00:01:31 This week's federal budget came with no new money. 60% of the money has already been spent, and that's only 17% of the Canadians that are covered. And if the federal government wants to negotiate with large jurisdictions like Quebec and Ontario, they're going to need to bring more money to the table, and we didn't see that in this budget. Marina von Stackleberg, CBC News, Ottawa. The liberal government has survived another confidence vote in Parliament. MPs voted overwhelmingly against a Block Quebecois amendment to the federal budget, calling for the budget to be rejected on the basis that it's, quote, harmful to Quebec.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Yesterday, MPs defeated a similar budget motion from the Conservatives. The budget itself isn't expected to be voted on until later this month. People in Edmonton Riverbend are reacting to the resignation of their member of parliament. Conservative, Matt Cherneroo, announced Thursday his intent to leave. Liam New Bigging has more. Rumors swirled all week that MP Matt Jenneroo was considering joining the Liberals after Nova Scotia MP Chris Don Tramont made the move Tuesday. But instead, the conservative MP committed to leave Parliament altogether. Some his constituency, like J.R. Dallara, are surprised.
Starting point is 00:02:39 I was actually kind of shocked by it because I've been following it closely, especially with the news of one of them crossing the floor. Local former staffer Kamvir Loll thinks differently. After a long career in politics, he said the move makes sense. even if the timing was a bit odd. I'm not super surprised that, you know, he chose to step back. I mean, he's had a political career that's 10 years federally and then, you know, previously a few years provincially. Jean-Aruz said the exact day he leaves will be decided later,
Starting point is 00:03:11 but suggested it would be in the spring. Liam Newbigin, CBC News, Edmonton. Alberta wants to know if residents want speed limits increased from 110 to 1.20 kilometers an hour on some highways. Following a review, the government is expected to conduct a mini-trial to assess the impacts. Transportation Minister Devin Grecian says several highways are designed for the higher speeds that Albertans are already traveling at. So we want to make sure that we can increase the speed limits to the actual engineered design that they are, because we're seeing a lot of Albertans are naturally driving these speeds because that's the way they were designed and
Starting point is 00:03:49 intended. The survey also asks Albertans if they're in favor of restricting commercial trucks from using the far left lane on highways with three or more lanes. They may not be champions, but the Toronto Blue Jays were a winning team for that city's slumping hospitality industry. Emma Barrett heads up marketing at Mill Street Brewery. The Jays just did what they did, and we saw a huge bump. So we actually over-delivered on what we expected to do in October by 30%. Mill Street, we've been so fortunate with the Jays run. We have done incredible numbers. It's been such a boom for our business. Payment platform Monaris reports by Game 7, restaurant activity was peaking along with anticipation, with total spending near the Rogers Center rising 26%. This past hour, the U.S. Supreme Court granted the Trump
Starting point is 00:04:36 administration's request to temporarily withhold billions of dollars in food aid payments. That overturns lower court orders that full payments be made under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which serves 42 million low-income Americans. That is, the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Mike Miles.
