Hey, I'm Sarah Marshall, and there's one story from the past that I've been circling around for years now.
This eight-part series traces the hidden history of the satanic panic in North America.
We'll connect the dots from Victoria, BC, to the backroads of Kentucky.
Satan was having a moment, the sensationalist heartthrob of our time.

From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Claude Fagg. Today is Indigenous Veterans Day,
first officially recognized in Manitoba back in 1994. But just this week, the province passed legislation enshrining it into law.
As Karen Paul's reports, some veterans see it as a sign of reconciliation. Indigenous Veterans Day started after an incident on Remembrance Day in 1991. A group of Mohawk Veterans
were told they couldn't place a wreath during official ceremonies in Ottawa.
It was another four years before indigenous veterans were allowed to participate.
That's a big part of the day for me as to honoring that unique history.
Justin Woodcock served in the Army and Navy for eight years.
He's now the Veterans Program Coordinator for the Southern Chiefs Organization in Manitoba.
A lot of First Nation veterans signed up at a higher rate to fight for the idea of democracy overseas and freedom
without being able to enjoy those same privileges
when they returned home to Canada.
Last month, the Canadian Armed Forces
apologized for racial discrimination and harassment
faced by past and current members.
We failed you.
Woodcock says that,
and Banatob's move to enshrine Indigenous Veterans Day in law,
is a big step forward.

In Ukraine, officials say a Russian drone strike
killed at least one person in an apartment building
in Denepro.
At least 11 others were reportedly injured.
President Vlomir Zelensky says Russia launched 450 drones and 45 missiles in overnight attacks
across the country, targeting the energy sector and infrastructure.
Peace talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan have collapsed.
The two sides have been meeting with mediators in Turkey, as relations have deteriorated
sharply in recent years. Border clashes last month saw the worst violence since the Taliban
returned to power in Afghanistan four years ago. Dominic Volaitis has more.
Afghanistan is blaming Pakistan for the breakdown of peace talks. This morning, a spokesperson for
the Taliban said negotiations had failed due to Islamabad, insisting Afghanistan stop the militant
groups inside its territory from launching attacks against Pakistan.
Fighting between the two South Asian neighbours broke out last month
after Pakistan launched air strikes in Afghanistan targeting militants
who'd ambushed and killed Pakistani soldiers.
Dozens were killed in the ensuing violence,
the worst since the Taliban took power in 2021.
Both sides are making sincere efforts to find a positive resolution to this complex.
Despite today's breakdown in peace talks,
Both sides say they remain committed to the ceasefire they signed in Doha last month, but it is fragile.

As the U.S. government shutdown continues, U.S. senators last night rejected a bill to pay workers,
some of whom have been going without a paycheck for over a month.
On this vote, the yeas are 53, three-fifths of the Senate duly chosen and swore not having voted in the affirmative.
The motion upon reconsideration is not agreed to.
The defeat of the motion means another day of unpaid work for thousands of workers,
including air traffic controllers.
Close to 1,000 flights were canceled yesterday.
UPS and FedEx are grounding their fleets of MD-11 cargo planes.
After this week's deadly crash in Louisville, Kentucky,
a UPSMD-11 went down in flames Tuesday.
Less than a minute after takeoff, at least 14 people, are reportedly dead.
The CFL Division Finals will be contested today.
In the East Final, the Hamilton Tiger Cats will host their first final since 2019 facing the Montreal Alouettes.
The West Final has the Saskatchewan Rough Riders who had the best record in the league this year, home to the BC Lions.
The two winners will advance to next week's 112th Great Cup game in Winnipeg.
And that is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Claude Fagig.
Thank you.
