Hey, I'm Sarah Marshall, and there's one story from the past that I've been circling around for years now.
This eight-part series traces the hidden history of the satanic panic in North America.
We'll connect the dots from Victoria, BC, to the backroads of Kentucky.
Satan was having a moment, the sensationalist heartthrob of our time.
The Devil You Know, available now wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
The actor who plays Bubbles on the show The Trailer Park Boys is facing sexual assault charges.
Mike Smith was charged earlier this month in connections with an incident in 2017 in Dartmouth.
Andrew Sampson has more.
As Bubbles, Mike Smith is one of the most recognizable stars of the trailer park boys.
The series has a worldwide audience and has become one of Nova Scotus' most well-known global exports.
The charges against Smith were laid early.
last month. Court documents didn't list specifics about the alleged incident, but he's been
ordered not to contact the alleged victim or visit their home, work, or school. Their identity
is protected by a publication ban, and the allegations have not yet been tested in court. In 2016,
Smith was arrested in Los Angeles and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery after an alleged
incident at a hotel in Hollywood. The charges were later dropped after Smith and the alleged victim
denied the allegations. Smith is due to appear in court on Monday, and
in Halifax. Andrew Samson, CBC News, Halifax.
Today is Indigenous Veterans Day, and communities across the country are honoring their sacrifice.
In New Brunswick, at the Sedon Ciske, St. Mary's First Nation, Chief Alan Polchies,
says he was proud to honor his ancestors' contribution to protect Canada's freedom.
Perch is one of our seven teachings.
The soldiers, our veterans that stand with us today, took that courage.
took the courage to go and fight for our country, to give us freedom. And today we honor that
with the sacred fire. Indigenous Veterans Day started after an incident on Remembrance Day in 1991,
where a group of Mohawk veterans were told they would not be allowed to place a wreath during
official ceremonies in Ottawa. The day was created to pay tribute to sacrifices made by indigenous
veterans from as early as the war of 1812, and also to acknowledge the historical injustices they
faced. A Nova Scotia judge has approved one of the largest class action settlements in the
province's history. He ruled that Nova Scotia should pay $32 million to as many as 2,600 people
with disabilities. It's compensation, it is compensation for being wrongly denied social assistance
benefits. A Nova Scotia woman has won a racial targeting case and awarded $20,000 in compensation. The
Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission ruled that an employee of a Canadian tire store
exhibited racial profiling based on the complainant's mixed black and indigenous ancestry.
The complainant told the tribunal she felt humiliated when she was stopped by a store
employee and asked to show a receipt. In northeast BC, the number of measles cases is
continuing to climb. New numbers show the virus is spreading in workplaces and public spaces
in Fort St. John. Matt Prepost has
more. The BC Center for Disease Control reports 29 new confirmed and probable measles infections
in northeast BC. Nine of them are currently active. Since an outbreak began in May, the Northeast
has recorded around 275 total cases. Most clustered in and around Fort St. John. Exposures in the last
two weeks have happened at the hospital, banks, restaurants, grocery stores, and in the city's airport
industrial area. Health officials say the virus is spreading quickly through unvaccinated families
and believe the true number of infections is likely higher than reported.
While vaccination rates in the peace increased over the summer,
they slowed down as the school year began.
People are still being urged to get their measles shots.
As officials predict, the city will continue seeing five or more new infections a day
for the foreseeable future.
Matt Preprost, CBC News, Fort St. John.
The Philippines is bracing for a super typhoon
expected to bring life-threatening storm surges
up to five meters tall and powerful destructive winds.
Typhoon Fung Wong is expected to hit the eastern coast late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Canadians traveling to Europe are facing new border measures as a group of 29 nations ramp up security.
The system will use various means including electronic kiosks to collect facial images and fingerprints to verify identities.
And that's the world this hour.
For CDC News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
Thank you.
