Today is Indigenous Veterans Day, and communities across the country are honoring their sacrifice.
In New Brunswick, at the Sedan Ciske, St. Mary's First Nation, Chief Alan Polchise says he was proud to honor his ancestors' contribution to protect Canada's freedom.
Purge is one of our seven teachings.
The soldiers, our veterans, that stand with the...
us today took that courage. He took the courage to go and fight for our country, to give us
freedom. And today we honor that with the sacred fire. Indigenous Veterans Day started after an
incident on Remembrance Day in 1991, where a group of Mohawk veterans were told they would not be
allowed to place a wreath during official ceremonies in Ottawa. The day was created to pay tribute to
the sacrifices made by Indigenous veterans from as early as the War of 1812 and to acknowledge
the historical injustices they faced.
The Smith government in Alberta is facing more labor unrest,
and this time it's nursing staff.
The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees
says more than 11,000 members voted 98% in favor of a strike.
They voted overwhelmingly in favor of strike action
because they are fed up with stagnant wages
and unsafe working conditions that hurts workers,
patients, and Alberta's public health care system.
The union says talks with Alberta health services and provincial health care agencies broke down in April
and says a strike notice could come as soon as November 17th if a deal isn't reached.
Bargaining between the sides is set to resume on Thursday.
In Northeast BC, the number of measles cases is continuing to climb.
New numbers show the virus is spreading in workplaces and public spaces in Fort St. John.
Matt Prepost has those details.
The BC Center for Disease Control reports 29 new confirmed and probable measles infections
in northeast BC. Nine of them are currently active. Since an outbreak began in May,
the Northeast has recorded around 275 total cases. Most clustered in and around Fort St. John.
Exposures in the last two weeks have happened at the hospital, banks, restaurants, grocery stores,
and in the city's airport industrial area. Health officials say the virus is spreading quickly
through unvaccinated families and believe the true number of infections is likely higher
than reported. While vaccination rates in the peace increased over the summer, they slowed down
as the school year began. People are still being urged to get their measles shots. As officials
predict, the city will continue seeing five or more new infections a day for the foreseeable
future. Matt Preprost, CBC News, Fort St. John. The actor who plays bubbles on the series
Trailer Park Boys is facing sexual assault charges. Mike Smith was charged earlier this month
in connection with an incident in 2017 in Dartmouth. Andrew Sampson has the
story. As bubbles, Mike Smith is one of the most recognizable stars of the trailer park boys. The
series has a worldwide audience and has become one of Nova Scotia's most well-known global exports.
The charges against Smith were laid early last month. Court documents didn't list specifics
about the alleged incident, but he's been ordered not to contact the alleged victim or visit
their home, work, or school. Their identity is protected by a publication ban and the allegations
have not yet been tested in court. In 2016, Smith was arrested in Los Angeles. Smith was arrested in Los
Angeles and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery after an alleged incident at a hotel in
Hollywood. The charges were later dropped after Smith and the alleged victim denied the allegations.
Smith is due to appear in court on Monday in Halifax. Andrew Samson, CBC News,
Halifax. The Philippines is bracing for a super typhoon, expected to bring life-threatening storm
surges up to five meters tall and powerful destructive winds. Typhoon Feng Wong is expected to hit
the eastern coast late Sunday night
or early Monday morning.
To the CFL,
it's the Western final and fans
are watching the BC Lions take on
the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. The two
teams are battling for a chance to play
the Montreal Alouettes in the biggest game
of the year. Winnipeg will
host the 112th
Grey Cup on November 16th.
And that is
the world this hour. For CBC
News, I'm Gina Louise Phillips.
Thanks for watching. Or
