Typhoon Fung Wong has made landfall in the Philippines, bringing with its sustained winds of 185 kilometers an hour, gusting up to 2.30. Already, at least two people have been killed in what is the second powerful storm to hit the Philippines in less than a week.

Typhoon Fung Wong is now. now barreling through the Philippines, just less than a week after the country was devastated by Typhoon Kalmagi, which killed more than 200 people. Now, nearly a million people have been evacuated in 11 regions. At a gymnasium-turned evacuation center, one woman says, I'm anxious and scared because we don't know how strong the typhoon will impact us. Known as Uwan locally, the country's civil defense office says up to 30 million people could be exposed to the hazards from the typhoon.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Butch Mili is the president of the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation. This is our fourth typhoon, major typhoon in a row. We've had two earthquakes. This has all happened in the last six to seven weeks. So our funds are starting to get exhausted because of the number of emergencies. Feng Wong is the 21st named typhoon to hit the Philippines this year. Michelle Song, CBC News, Toronto. Nova Scotia MP, Chris Dantramal, says he's not the only MP,
Starting point is 00:01:59 who's weary of the Conservative Party. Last week, he decided to cross the floor and join the Liberals. He says the party had begun to feel like a frat house. Speaking to the CBC, he also described what happened when news leaked that he was thinking about making the move. I had the house leader and the whip barge into my office, pushed my assistant aside, rush in to sit there and, you know, tell me how much of a snake I really was, how dare you do that.
Starting point is 00:02:26 And it really pushed me to a point where It's like, okay, well, I guess my decision is made for sure now. A statement from Pahliav's office accuses him of willfully deceiving his voters, friends, and colleagues by switching parties. Don Tremal's decision to cross the floor means the liberals are just two seats away from a majority government. In Washington, the U.S. Senate is holding a rare Sunday session to try to end the federal government shutdown now into its 40th day. The Democrats and Republicans have failed to reach an agreement on how to fund the government. Everything from food aid to air traffic control systems to veterans programs have been affected, as has the wider economy, according to Treasury Secretary, Scott Besant.
Starting point is 00:03:09 We've seen an impact on the economy from day one, but it's getting worse and worse. Now there are estimates that economic growth for this quarter could be cut by as much as half if this shutdown continues. The Democrats are demanding an extension to a program that subsidizes Obamacare for low-income Americans. So far, Republicans have refused. Syria carried out nationwide raids last week, targeting what it says are Islamic state cells. The raids come ahead of President Ahmed al-Shara's trip to the White House tomorrow. Dominic Bolitis has the story.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Syrian security forces carried out 61 raids and arrested more than 70 people. Explosives and weapons were also seized. Officials say many of those detained in the war. the intelligence-led operation are wanted criminals, believed to be linked to Islamic State. The raids come as Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharah prepares to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington Monday, when he will join a U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State. The visit is unprecedented, with Al-S.ara set to become Syria's first leader to pay an official visit to the White House. The United States is reportedly preparing to establish a military presence
Starting point is 00:04:26 in Damascus as part of a security pact being brokered between Syria and Israel. Dominic Volaitis for CBC News, Bristol, England. And Hamas handed over another set of remains to Israel today. They belong to Hadar Golden, an Israeli soldier killed in 2014. That means the bodies of only four hostages remain in Gaza.
