I'm Kate McGilvery. As it still reels from a typhoon last week, the Philippines is being pummeled again. Typhoon Feng Wong slammed into the main island of Luzon earlier today, with sustained winds of 185 kilometers an hour, gusting up to 240.
Starting point is 00:00:53 It's already killed at least two and forced authorities to order the evacuation of nearly a million people. Just a few days ago, a separate typhoon killed more than 200 people in the Philippines. Ukraine is facing a catastrophic energy crisis today after Russian attacks targeted its power infrastructure. Authorities in Kiev say power will be rationed across the country for up to 16 hours a day to allow for emergency repairs. Dominic Philitis has the latest. At least seven people have been killed across Ukraine this weekend as Russia targeted the country with hundreds of drones. It was, according to Ukraine's presidents of Volodymyr Zelensky, another huge attack. The strike was massive with a lot of ballistic missiles, he says.
Starting point is 00:01:41 There were at least 25 and more than 450 drones of various types. Ukraine's energy infrastructure was badly damaged in the latest assault. The state power firm warning generating capacity is down to zero as a result, meaning electricity will be cut for up to 16 hours in several parts of the country today. Ukraine too is stepping up its attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure, striking oil depots and refineries. Overnight, Ukrainian drones temporarily disrupted power and heating in the southwestern Russian city of Voronish. Dominic Vilitis for CBC News, Bristol, England. We are learning more about what prompted a conservative MP to cross the floor to the Liberal Party.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Chris Dantramal spoke to the CBC's Catherine Cullen, saying he wasn't comfortable with conservative leadership and that he's not alone. You know, people aren't happy with the leadership style, not just of the leader, but of the leadership team that's there. Quite honestly, a lot of times I felt it was part of a frat house rather than a serious political party. What do you mean by that?
Starting point is 00:02:49 Well, I mean, it was about who was friends with who, you know, who could be the most negative, who could be the most cutting. Don Tramol's crossing of the floor means the liberals are just two seats shy of a majority government. A statement from Polyev's office accuses him of willfully deceiving his voters, friends, and colleagues. It says that he left the conservatives because they didn't support his desire to become deputy speaker. In Washington, you're going to see air travel be reduced to a trickle. There are not going to be that many flights that fly if this thing doesn't open back up. That's the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy talking about the U.S. government shutdown
Starting point is 00:03:25 now into its 40th day. The Senate is holding a rare Sunday session this afternoon aimed at ending the impasse. In the meantime, air traffic controllers aren't being paid and increasingly aren't going to work. Yesterday, 18 or 22 controllers in Atlanta didn't show up. We had 81 staffing triggers throughout the national airspace yesterday. That means controllers weren't coming to work. We have controllers who, again, are making decisions to feed their families as opposed to come to towers or tracons and do their jobs. The Democrats are demanding the Republicans extend subsidies for Obamacare
Starting point is 00:03:58 in order to ensure millions of Americans don't lose health insurance. Republicans so far are refusing that demand. And in New Delhi. Hundreds of people gather to protest the worsening air quality in many cities in India and the government's inability to bring it under control. New Delhi's air quality ranks as one of the worst in the world. Many residents suffer from respiratory illnesses. I think we all know the kind of poisonous air we are breathing and what our children are breathing.
Starting point is 00:04:29 We are handing a pack of cigarettes to our newborns every day. So unless we make this a priority, we will be a country of sick people. A whole generation of children like this will be sick. Urban areas in India and Pakistan are prone to thick smog in the winter when cold, heavy air traps construction dust, emissions and smoke. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Kate McGilfrey. Thank you.
