Donate at GeoFoundation.com. from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings a call is being made for the government to take action on the soaring cost of baby formula and there's no doubt it is soaring statistics canada says it's up by 30% over the past two years and 80% since 2017 jessica pope has more Six-month-old Charlotte is still exclusively formula-fed. Her mother, Cassandra Shedden, in Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario, says it costs up to $120 a week to keep her bottle full. And formula prices are straining her already razor-thin budget.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Sometimes you're trying to choose between bells and feeding your kids. Leslie Frank has been tracking the issue nationally for nearly two decades. She is the Canada Research Chair in Food, Health and Social Justice at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. Frank says her national research paints a dire picture. Infant formula is now locked up because it's one of the most stolen food products in Canada. Most of Canada's baby formula comes from a largely consolidated U.S. market. She says increasing the Canada child benefit amount would help struggling families or even nationalizing baby formula production.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Jessica Pope, CBC News, Sudbury, Ontario. The parliamentary budget officers projecting Ottawa will blow past the new fiscal anchors it set out in last week's federal budget. Interim budget officer Jason Jakes is saying Ottawa is using overly expansive definitions of capital spending and predicts new spending plans will leave the government with an operating deficit. The PBO's analysis of the Liberal Budget Outlook also projects that it's unlikely the government will meet its goal of shrinking the deficit as a share of GDP. Indigenous protesters are once again demanding to be heard at the COP 30 Climate Conference in Brazil. Earlier this week, they squared off with security as they tried to force their way into the talks, and this morning, they blocked the main entrance. Susan Ormiston reports.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Hold the line. Hold the line. All the line. A long line of indigenous people. people blocked the main road to the entrance of COP 30 this morning. A peaceful protest. They stood their ground from 5 a.m. demanding a greater say in the negotiations going on inside. They are worried about future potentials for drilling of oil near the Amazon River, and they want more of their land protected. They were able to secure a meeting with the president of COP 30, who was escorted by the indigenous people into a more secure area. When we spoke to the president, he said they will make space for greater dialogue with the indigenous people of Brazil. It's something that the Brazilian president promised out of these
Starting point is 00:03:38 COP 30 negotiations. Susan Ormiston, CBC News, Belen, Brazil. With Kiev taking the brunt of the assault, Russia has carried out another widespread bombardment of Ukraine. It's believed to be the most devastating attack in recent weeks with at least six people killed. Anna Cunningham has more. The soundtrack to Keeves Knight, air raid sirens, Ukraine's air defenses, and then explosions. The skyline of Ukraine's capital lit up with an orange glow. President Vladimir Zelensky posting on social media says this was a heinous and wicked attack against his country.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Ukraine's military says it counted 430 incoming drones and 18 missiles. By daylight, the damage is clearly visible. 11 apartment blocks reportedly took direct hits. This is a change in tactics by Russia, who recently concentrated on the east of Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructures there. Russia consistently denies targeting residential areas, but the cleanup in Kiev today paints a different picture. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London. And that is the world this hour.
