Starting point is 00:00:00 You may have heard of the sex cult nexium and the famous actress who went to prison for her involvement, Alison Mack. But she's never told her side of the story, until now. People assume that I'm like this pervert. My name is Natalie Robamed, and in my new podcast, I talked to Alison to try to understand how she went from TV actor to cult member and what she thinks of it all now. How do you feel about having been involved in bringing sexual trauma at other people? I mean, I don't even know how to answer that question. Alison, after nexium from CBC's on cover, is available now wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, it's the world this hour.
Starting point is 00:00:43 I'm Joe Cummings. The future of the Mark Carney liberal government will be determined today. A confidence vote is being held on the liberal budget, and if it doesn't pass, the government could fall and Canadians could be headed for an election. The Liberals need two opposition votes or abstentions, and it's not clear yet if they'll get them. Janice McGregor has more. Everyone says they don't want an election right now, but no one wants to be the first to turn away. If the liberals were secretly hoping to trigger one, this is a funny budget to want to run on.
Starting point is 00:01:18 It's not loaded up with short-term goodies for voters. It's a narrative of long-term economic transformation that asks Canadians to be patient, have faith, trust them. The seven new Democrat MPs are meeting this morning to continue their deliberations. Two of them, interim leader Don Davies and BCMP Gore-Johns, admit there are things in this budget they ask for that would help the people they represent. But even if they don't vote in favor or abstain, in the first two budget votes, it was for conservative MPs who didn't turn up. Even though Pierre-Poliath's office said Matt Jenneru wasn't resigning until spring, he didn't vote. Shannon Stubbs office said she was on medical leave, but in the app that MPs used to vote remotely, lets a riding be represented so long as an MP can show their face and push a button.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Janice McGregor, CBC News, Ottawa. Canada's inflation rate eased off last month. Statistics Canada says it fell to 2.2% from 2.4 in September. A drop in the price of gas and groceries were the two main factors. Today's update comes ahead of the Bank of Canada's final interest. straight setting of the year. It's set for next month, December the 10th. U.S. President Donald Trump appears to be doing an about-face on the Jeffrey Epstein files. In a social media post last night, Trump says he now wants all Republicans to vote for the full release of the files.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Willie Lowry has more now from Washington. So President Donald Trump's comments come after a week of mounting pressure from all sides to release the Epstein files. Up until now, we've seen Trump's reaction evolved from silence to anger. And finally, to this late-night diatribe on social media. In his post, he said, quote, House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files because we have nothing to hide. Just hours before his about face, he told reporters, the push to release the documents was a Democrat hoax. So they're using Jeffrey Epstein as a deflection from the tremendous success that we're having as a party. So we expect the House to hold a vote on whether to release the files sometime this week.
Starting point is 00:03:29 If it passes, it will then be up to the Senate and then Donald Trump to sign off on it. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. A report by an Israeli human rights group is suggesting at least 98 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since the start of the war in Gaza. The group says systemic violence and the denial of medical care contributed to the majority of the deaths. Israel's prison service has commented saying it operates in accordance with the law. The Army says it's aware there have been detainee fatalities, but it insists the deaths involve people with pre-existing illnesses or combat-related injuries. The CFL has a new Grey Cup champion.
Starting point is 00:04:14 The Saskatchewan Rough Riders and Trevor Harris have won the Grey Cup. In Winnipeg last night before a sellout crowd, that's the Saskatchewan Rough Riders, winning this year's Grey Cup game. The riders beat the Montreal Alouettes, 2517, with Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris named the game's MVP. For the writer franchise, it's their fifth Grey Cup title. As for the victory parade, it's set for tomorrow in downtown Regina. And that is the world this hour.
