Starting point is 00:00:37 The liberal government's fate is being decided right now. MPs are voting on the federal budget tabled earlier this month. It could be the Carney government's first and final test. If they fail, Canadians could once again be going to the polls. Marina von Stackleberg joins me now live from Ottawa. Marina, what's the latest? Yeah, well, we're watching this vote come in right now at this very moment in the of Commons. Right now, the vote results are 170, yay, and 166, nay. But because of this virtual
Starting point is 00:01:07 voting, we are waiting here just for a few votes to be tallied. So at this point, we do not know if Carney's budget is passing or not. What I can say is this is a razor-thin margin here. The liberals have 170 seats. When the day started today, they needed two opposition votes to get this budget passed. We knew that the bloc had always said they would vote against. So eyes were on the opposition. Green Party leader Elizabeth May came out this afternoon and said she would support it, saying that she had gotten a public commitment from Carney that his government would respect Canada's Paris climate targets. Have a listen to some of what she had to say. Against what I had expected to say to you today, I'm going to vote yes for the country, for the planet, and for my
Starting point is 00:01:55 hope in the future. The liberals can't count on me voting confidence in the government again without delivering on the words I heard. So right now we are still waiting on these vote results. We do not have a final confirmation. We are hearing that MP for Winnipeg Center, NDP, MP Leah Gazan is speaking and there are some issues around voting. So we are waiting to get those results. We do know that a number of the NDP have voted no against this budget. And we know that Gorge Johns, the NDP MP for BC, has abstained. And I'm just getting an update right now that the vote has passed. So the budget has passed 170 votes to 168. The liberals now standing up in the House of Commons to applause. So what kind of position does this leave the government in now? Well, now they're
Starting point is 00:02:50 able to start bringing in their budget measures. That will include a $78 billion deficit, $141 billion in new spending over five years, including for defense and infrastructure. And this is the opportunity for Carney to say that he has survived this first big test inside the House of Commons. Marina, breaking news happening right here, right now. Thanks so much for being here with us. You're welcome. Marina von Stackleberg there in Ottawa. To some other news, Now, Canada's inflation rate slowed down last month. Statistics Canada says it fell to 2.2% from 2.4 in September. That was largely due to lower gas prices.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Grocery prices grew at a slower pace last month after outpacing overall inflation for nine months in a row. Another big vote happening in the world today, the UN Security Council has voted in favor of Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan for Gaza. That resolution includes the establishment of a board of peace led by the U.S. President, and also an international stabilization force. U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Michael Waltz, says the force will play an important role. The International Stabilization Force will stabilize the security environment,
Starting point is 00:04:03 support the demilitarization of Gaza, dismantle terrorist infrastructure, decommissioned weapons, and maintain the safety of Palestinian civilians. The resolution also says if the Palestinian Authority is reformed, the conditions may finally be in place for a pathway to, to Palestinian self-determination and statehood. The possibility of a Palestinian statehood has drawn objections from Israel. Hamas has rejected the proposal. And just to recap our top story, the Liberals' federal budget has passed.
Starting point is 00:04:35 That means the Carney government has survived a confidence vote in what's been a critical moment for the prime minister. Thank you for listening to The World This Hour. I'm Stephanie Scandaris. Thank you.
