Starting point is 00:00:00 You may have heard of the sex cult nexium and the famous actress who went to prison for her involvement, Alison Mack. But she's never told her side of the story, until now. People assume that I'm like this pervert. My name is Natalie Robamed, and in my new podcast, I talked to Alison to try to understand how she went from TV actor to cult member and what she thinks of it all now. How do you feel about having been involved in bringing sexual trauma at other people? I mean, I don't even know how to answer that question. Alison, after Nexium from CBC's On Cover, is available now, wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Stephanie Scandaris on Capitol Hill.
Starting point is 00:00:43 The bill is passed, and without objection, the motion to reconsider is laid on the table. The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to force the Justice Department to release documents relating to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The measure must be approved by the Senate next. Public pressure has been mounting on investigators to release the files. Documents that have already been made public mention a slate of high-profile figures, including the U.S. President. Donald Trump has long denied all wrongdoing. Trump is rolling out the red carpet for Saudi Arabia's crown prince. Muhammad bin Salman is in the White House with promises to invest nearly a trillion dollars in business deals and security agreements.
Starting point is 00:01:28 The meeting largely skirted human rights concerns, despite U.S. intelligence that directly ties bin Salman to the 2018 killing of a Washington Post journalist. Trump dismissed accusations. The Crown Prince ordered the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happened, but he knew nothing about it. Bin Salman once again denied any involvement in Khashoggi's death. He insists Saudi Arabia took, all the right steps in the investigation. Prime Minister Mark Carney's minority government faces another confidence vote today. It comes on the heels of the Liberals
Starting point is 00:02:07 narrowly surviving last night's budget vote, avoiding a snap federal election. 170 MPs, all Liberals in the lone green, voted for it, 168 MPs voted against. David Thurton has more on what to expect today. Good day for Canada, moving forward. Prime Minister Mark Carney, the day after his budget passes, albeit by a razor-thin margin.
Starting point is 00:02:30 There are more votes, of course, to come through the budget process, but an important step for a country. As Carney said, his minority liberal government is not out of the woods. More confidence votes are on the way. Those votes are keeping liberals, like House leader, Steve McKinnon, on their toes. I have very good advice for everyone. If you want to be comfortable, don't enter federal politics. The next steps comes as soon as this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:02:56 It involves a ways and means motion. That's a procedural step which in this case allows the government to table its budget implementation bill. That contains the budget's fine print. Both are typically considered confidence votes. David Thornton, CBC News, Ottawa. A new report from an anti-fraud nonprofit group shows which cars are most attractive to thieves in Ontario. A police crackdown has led to a decline in auto thefts across the province. But as Colin Butler reports, criminals nationwide still walked away with more than a billion dollars worth of vehicles last year.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Ake's Vice President of Investigative Services, Brian Gass, says auto theft is still high reward, low risk. Pickup trucks and SUVs continue to dominate the list, but the luxury vehicles is a growing trend. The new report outlines the most stolen models by volume, the 2024 Honda CRV, the 2022 Dodge Ram 1500, and the 2019 Honda Civic, but the worst by frequency is the 2024 Lexus TX. One in four in Ontario was stolen last year. Police in the province say theft is dropping fast, thanks to public awareness and new tech, like automated license plate scanners, but Ontario and Quebec remain Canada's car theft hotspots. Wheel clamps, trackers, and signal blocker pouches for key fobs all help.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Gas says you don't need every tool, but usually, The less stolen car is the one that's harder to steal. Colin Butler, CBC News, London, Ontario. The company behind much of the Internet's infrastructure is apologizing for today's disruption. Cloud Fair says the outage happened after a key configuration file did not work as intended, and it was not a result of a cyber attack. A number of high-profile websites and services went down early this morning, including X, chat, GPT, Zoom, and Canva.
Starting point is 00:04:54 And that is The World This Hour. For CBC News, I'm Stephanie Scandaris.
