Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude peg leaders from around the world are in johannisburg for the g20 summit it's the first summit to be hosted by an african nation among those in attendance is canada's prime minister mark carney who is expected to push for more trade with european and asian partners the cbc's carina roman is traveling with the prime minister and has more. This is a bit of a take-stock moment for all members of the G20, especially with the absence of the U.S. I mean, Donald Trump is boycotting the summit. In fact, there is no American official here. Yet one of the themes of this G20 is solidarity, in contrast to what Carney has characterized as a full rupture in the global world order. So for Canada, it's about focusing on like-minded
Starting point is 00:01:20 countries. For example, Carney will meet today at some point with the European Union. Commission and Vietnam's president, trying to be a bridge between the Pacific Rim and European trade blocks. And Carney is also here to further Canada's trade interests with new partners, which is really all about his continuing to try and diversify our trade partners and become less reliant on the U.S. Corina Roman, CBC News, Johannesburg. Meanwhile, EU leaders have come out in full support of Ukraine at the G20 summit with concerns about the proposed 28-point U.S. plan for peace with Russia. In a joint statement today, EU leaders said the plan will, quote, require additional work and that they're concerned by the
Starting point is 00:02:04 proposed limitations on Ukraine's armed forces, which they say would leave Ukraine vulnerable to attack. In Montreal, one person is dead and two others are in critical condition after being hit by a regional light rail train. Police say it happened overnight in the city's south shore. All three are described as youths. Police say they were walking on the tracks at the time of the accident. But no trains had been scheduled to run at that time. The light rail automated driverless system began running in 2023. The International Committee of the Red Cross is scaling back its global humanitarian efforts. The downsizing will see its budget slashed and thousands of layoffs. As Dominic Volitis reports, the organisation is facing a major funding shortfall.
Starting point is 00:02:52 The Red Cross says the humanitarian sector is facing a financial crisis of unprecedented proportions. In response, the organisation plans to reduce its budget for next year by more than $2 billion and will shed some 3,000 jobs, around 15% of its total global staff. Aid budgets are facing a huge shortfall, as international donors like Britain and Germany shift their focus towards defence. the same time, the United States, which is the top global aid contributor, is overhauling its foreign assistance programs as President Donald Trump prioritizes America First policies. Despite the budget cuts, the Red Cross says it intends to remain in places like Israel,
Starting point is 00:03:34 Ukraine and Sudan, but the organization admits current financial realities are forcing it to make difficult decisions to ensure it can continue its work. Dominic Volitus for CBC News, Bristol, England. The FBI says another one of Ryan Wedding's Canadian accomplices has been arrested. Rashid Pasqua, Hossein, went by the ala, by the alias, J.P. Morgan. He was arrested Friday by the RCMP, and his facing charges related to cocaine trafficking and money laundering. According to U.S. federal grand jury indictment unsealed this week, Hussein was a key part of Wedding's multi-million dollar money laundering operation.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Firebrand Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green says she's resigning. She was one of Donald Trump's most loyal supporters, but she's opposed him on several issues. Most notably, the Jeffrey Epstein files. Standing up for American women who were raped at 14 years old, trafficked and used by rich, powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the president of the United States, whom I fought for. Last week, Trump branded her Marjorie Trader Green. And that is your world this hour.
