Pentagon Chief Pete Hegsyth says President Donald Trump has asked for hundreds of additional National Guard troops to be deployed to Washington, D.C. The request comes after two West Virginia National Guard members were shot near the White House. FBI director Cash Patel says they're in critical. condition after previous reports from the state's governor saying they had died. Katie Nicholson has more from Washington. Massive police presence just a few blocks northwest of the White House after two National Guard members were shot. The guards are in critical condition in two separate hospitals. Homeland Security head, Christine Nome, has asked for prayers for the Guard members. One suspect, according to D.C. police, is in custody. U.S. President Donald Trump, who's in Florida

for Thanksgiving posted on social media, the alleged shooter is also severely wound. it and called the suspect an animal who will pay a very steep price. Katie Nicholson, CBC News, Washington. Officials in Hong Kong say three men have been arrested in connection with a massive apartment complex fire. The fire's been burning for hours now. It's killed at least 40 people. Nearly 300 are missing.

There are fears that the number of casualties will climb as firefighters try to rescue trapped residents. Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled a sweeping strategy to protect domestic. steel and lumber producers. The measures range from import restrictions to financial supports to requirements to buy Canadian on major projects. David Thurton has more. We must protect our workers and our industries who are most exposed to U.S. tariffs. Those protections, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced, include limiting how much foreign steel enters Canada tariff-free from countries outside North America.

Doing so will unlock hundreds of millions of dollars in domestic demand for those Also on the table, $1 billion in loans and support for the lumber industry facing their own software tariffs, plus a federal rail subsidy. We will make it more affordable to transport Canadian steel and lumber across this country by cutting freight rates for transporting steel and lumber interprovincially by 50%. The subsidy will go to Canadian National, Kansas City, and Canadian Pacific Railways. The Prime Minister also says he plans to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump in his visit to Washington next week.

Environment Canada is introducing a new warning system to give people more information about the conditions heading their way. Helena Mahalik has more. Watches and warnings from Environment and Climate Change Canada are now color-coded by severity. We are introducing three color levels to our existing alerts.

yellow, orange, and red. Gerald Chang, with the ECCC, says weather statements that don't reach the severity threshold for a warning will be issued in the color gray. When we issue yellow alerts, it means hazardous weather may cause damage, disruption, or health impacts, and when we see higher risk, will escalate it to an orange alert. Orange is for weather events more likely to cause a widespread impact, including damage to a big area, like storms that could knock out power. A red alert means possibly life-threatening weather, like Hurricane Fiona in 2022. Environment Canada says the warning system is changing, so people can

better understand how to prepare and take action against severe weather. Helena Moholic, CBC News, Saskatoon. And Canadian parliamentary history has been made by Black Quepecois MP, Louis Plamondon. The 82-year-old now holds the record for the most consecutive appearances in House of Commons. On Monday, he surpassed Sir Wilfred Laurier by sitting for 15,000 and 57 days.
