FBI director cash patel says two members of the national guard are in critical condition
after being hit near the white house and what is being described as a targeted shooting
dc metropolitan police say the suspect was also shot during the incident and has been taken into
custody patel says the FBI will take the lead on this investigation
This will be treated at the federal level as an assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
The FBI will lead out on that mission with our interagency partners to include the Department of Homeland Security, Secret Service, ATF, DEA, all of our resources to make sure we find the perpetrator is responsible for this heinous act.
And make no mistake, they will be brought to justice.
About 2,000 National Guard members were deployed to Washington in August, part of a controversial national crime fighting strategy that's now fueling an ongoing court battle and a public debate.
wake of the shooting, President Donald Trump has asked for 500 more National Guard members
to be deployed to the city. In Hong Kong, at least 44 people are dead and close to 300
still missing after a massive fire spread between apartment towers and a complex that houses
nearly 5,000 residents. It broke out mid-afternoon local time. 16 hours later, the flames
remain out of control at several buildings. Hong Kong police say three people have been arrested on
suspicion of manslaughter. They're linked to a construction firm. The buildings had been undergoing
renovations when the fire began. Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled a sweeping strategy to protect
domestic steel and lumber producers. The measures range from import restrictions to financial support
to requirements to buy Canadian on major projects. David Thurton breaks it down.
We must protect our workers and our industries who are most exposed to U.S. tariffs.
Those protections Prime Minister Mark Carney announced include limiting how much foreign steel enters Canada tariff-free from countries outside North America.
Doing so will unlock hundreds of millions of dollars in domestic demand for those producers.
Also on the table, $1 billion in loans and support for the lumber industry facing their own software tariffs.
Plus, a federal rail subsidy.
We will make it more affordable to transport Canadian steel and lumber across this country.
by cutting freight rates for transporting steel and lumber interprovincially by 50%.
The subsidy will go to Canadian National, Kansas City, and Canadian Pacific Railways.
The Prime Minister also says he plans to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump
in his visit to Washington next week.

As of today, official weather alerts in Canada look different.
Environment Canada is introducing a new warning system
to give people more information about the conditions heading their way.
Halena Mahalik has more.
Watches and warnings from Environment and Climate Change Canada are now color-coded by severity.
We are introducing three color levels to our existing alerts, yellow, orange, and red.
Gerald Chang, with the ECCC, says weather statements that don't reach the severity threshold for a warning will be issued in the color gray.
When we issue yellow alerts, it means hazardous weather may cause damage, disruption, or health impacts.
and when we see higher risk will escalate it to an orange alert.
Orange is for weather events more likely to cause a widespread impact,
including damage to a big area, like storms that could knock out power.
A red alert means possibly life-threatening weather.
Like Hurricane Fiona in 2022,
Environment Canada says the warning system is changing
so people can better understand how to prepare
and take action against severe weather.

And Canadian parliamentary history has been made by Black Quebecois MP Louis Plamondon.
The 82-year-old now holds the record for the most consecutive appearances in the House of Commons.
On Monday, he surpassed Sir Wilfrid Laurier by sitting for 15,057 days.
Plamondon first came to Ottawa in 1984 and says he plans to run again.
That is the world this hour.
