It could be the start of a new relationship for Alberta and Ottawa. A great day for Alberta. It's a great day for Canada. That's Prime Minister Mark Carney, right.
Starting point is 00:00:30 before signing a memorandum of understanding with the province earlier today. It offers Ottawa's political support for the construction of a pipeline from Alberta's oil patch to BC's north coast. The MOU gives Alberta special exemptions from federal environmental laws, including the suspension of a proposed oil and gas emissions cap. Meanwhile, the blowback has already begun. British-C.-C.-Polombian indigenous leaders and the BC Premier are expressing their concerns,
Starting point is 00:00:56 And hours after the MOU deal was signed, Canada's former environment minister, Stephen Gilbeau, announced he's resigning from federal cabinet because of it, calling the agreement a serious mistake. David Thurton reports. Stephen Gilbo has announced what has long been rumored. Canada's former environment and climate change minister is resigning from cabinet, although he will remain as a liberal MP. In a statement, Gilbo said he can not. no longer serve in cabinet, now that Prime Minister Mark Carney signed in accord with Alberta that could clear the path for a bitumen pipeline to Asian markets. Gilbo says a pipeline would have a major environmental impact crossing the Great Bear Rainforest
Starting point is 00:01:42 and contributing to a significant increase in climate pollution and will move Canada further away from its greenhouse gas reduction targets. Meanwhile, this reaction from the governing United Conservative Party. We have a new pipeline coming here to Alberta, and we just learned that Steve Ingebo has resigned from the federal cabinet. So good news all around, Mr. Speaker. MLA has chaired the news in the Alberta legislature. David Thornton, CBC News, Annawa. The U.S. President says one of the National Guard members shot yesterday in Washington, D.C., has died from her injuries.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Donald Trump described Sarah Bextram as highly respected and magnificent. He says the other victim is fighting for his life in hospital. An Afghan national, Ramanula Lacanwal, is accused of attacking them. Lecanwall had previously worked alongside U.S. intelligence during the Afghanistan war. He entered the U.S. in 2021 under a program for Afghans who assisted American troops. Authorities say the motive isn't yet clear. The death toll is rising in Hong Kong, where emergency services now say at least 94 people have died in a massive apartment complex fire. More than 24 hours after it began, the fires still not entirely extinguished.
Starting point is 00:02:57 There's also no update on how many residents are still missing as firefighters continue a long and difficult search and rescue mission. Patrick Fouke has more. As night fell the second day after the fire at the Wang Fung Quarter State broke out, firefighters were still putting out flames inside the building blocks. Authorities say the blaze has been brought under control, but hundreds of residents remain missing. rescuers are pushing through to reach the remaining units. Meanwhile, those unable to return to their homes
Starting point is 00:03:26 are spending another night in temporary shelters. One person named Jiang said she didn't expect us to last so long. She says some of the people she knows that the estate have nothing left but the clothes they're wearing. Police have arrested three men on suspicion of manslaughter. It worked for a company involved in the renovations on the buildings, and officials say gross negligence may be to blame for the rapid spread of the blaze.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Authorities are carrying out inspections at other buildings under renovation to sea of bamboo scaffolding and mesh materials meet fire-retardant standards. Patrick Fault for CBC News, Hong Kong. And France is launching a new voluntary military program. President Emmanuel Macron says it will train thousands of volunteers, ages 18 and 19, starting next year. They'll be paid to serve for 10 months in France
Starting point is 00:04:16 and its overseas territories, but won't take part in any. military operations abroad. After that, they'll become part of the Army Reserves.
