The Prime Minister and El Prudas Premier signed a memorandum of understanding on energy including a path to building a pipeline from the Alberta oil patch to the BC coast.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Olivia Stefanovic has more. This is Canada working. Prime Minister Mark Carney extending an olive branch to Alberta. At the core of the agreement, a priority to have a pipeline, that's going to make Canada stronger. Signing a memorandum of understanding with Premier Danielle Smith, declaring a new bitchement pipeline, the first project of national interest. This prime minister has made it clear to me that he is willing to be. to work with me and Alberta's government to accomplish that shared goal.
Starting point is 00:01:04 But Carney's support doesn't come without a catch. The agreement ties the approval of one or more privately financed pipelines to Alberta boosting its industrial carbon price, from $95 to $130 per ton, and building Pathways Plus, the world's largest carbon capture project, and if a new pipeline is approved, the federal government would temporarily lift the oil tanker ban along the B.C. coast. Olivia Estefanovich, CBC News, Ottawa. The deal rules back environmental protections, and it's already cost Mark Kearney a cabinet minister. Canadian identity minister and former environment minister, Stephen Gilbo, is quitting,
Starting point is 00:01:45 but will stay on as a liberal MP. Gilbo was a proponent of strong environmental regulation in the Trudeau government and a frequent target of criticism by Alberta's premier. There's also a strong reaction from BC. Premier David Eby pointing out that province has the most nation-building projects identified so far, and he says he worries the pipeline proposal will divert away from stronger shovel-ready projects. We need to make sure that this project doesn't become an energy vampire, with all of the variables that have yet to be fulfilled.
Starting point is 00:02:17 No proponent, no route, no money, no First Nation support, that it cannot draw limited federal. resources, away from the real projects. The Union of BC Indian Chiefs is also calling the energy deal, quote, deeply irresponsible. It says the deal was negotiating without the involvement of coastal First Nations. In Hong Kong, the number of people killed in a massive high-rise fire is now at least 94, with hundreds more still missing. As the investigation into the cause continues, authorities are laying blame
Starting point is 00:02:51 and promising changes to prevent another tragedy. Cameron McIntosh reports. Seven, high-rise apartment building stands smoldering, charred black. The fires now under control, but more than 200 people are still missing. As firefighters struggle to reach residents, believe trapped on higher levels. We will not give up any chance to save life. Wang Ka Wing is Hong Kong's deputy director of fire services. Our major challenge is the temperature is very high, and the inside layout is very compact.
Starting point is 00:03:24 The towers, which were under external renovations, were draped in massive green tarps, held up by bamboo scaffolding. Police alleged the scaffolding and foam cladding on the buildings caught fire, rapidly spreading and engulfing the towers. Hong Kong's chief executive, John Lee, says three executives of the company doing the work have been arrested. He's ordering inspections of all of Hong Kong's public housing undergoing significant renovations. Cameron McIntosh, CBC News, Winnipeg. President says U.S. official will be in Moscow next week for talks to end the war in Ukraine. At a news conference in Kyrgyzstan, Vladimir Putin called the American Peace proposal a starting point, but he repeated demands for Ukraine to give up territory and claimed Vladimir Zelenskyy is an illegitimate president.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Putin's comments are his first since the White House presented the plan last week. Ukraine has agreed to move ahead with the framework, with some amendments.
