Starting point is 00:00:46 the ukrainian president bladimir zelensky is in paris today while the e u.U defense ministers are in brussels and after meeting with ukrainian officials over the weekend in florida u.s special envoy steve whitkoff is on his way to Russia to sit down tomorrow with Vladimir Putin. Crystal Gamansing has more. Do you trust the Americans that they can find a good solution for Ukraine? Starting point is 00:01:17 I trust that Ukrainians stand up for themselves. Supporting Ukraine and bolstering European security are both again on the agenda in Brussels. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the state of negotiations as delicate with a lot of moving parts. We don't just want to end the war. We also want to help Ukraine be safe forever. Rubio put an emphasis on securing economic prosperity for Ukraine following a meeting with the head of Ukraine's Security Council, Rustem Umerov, in Florida. Russian officials said last week, it is not giving up on its demands or objectives they set out when they were. launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine back in 2022. Starting point is 00:02:05 Global Affairs Canada says a Canadian citizen has been injured in the West Bank. Local media reports say three Italian activists and a Canadian were attacked by a group of extremist settlers on Saturday night. The report says 10 mask settlers broke into a house, stool, passports, and cell phones. The Canadian government says it condemns the act of violence. and says it wants the Israeli authorities to take action against those responsible. The search continues in California for the suspect or suspects wanted in connection with a weekend mass shooting. Four people, including three children, were killed in what police are calling a targeted shooting at a child's birthday party. Steve Futterman reports.
Starting point is 00:02:48 We do not have anyone in custody at this time. 24 hours after the deadly mass shooting, the shock hasn't worn off. Patrick Withrow, the sheriff of San Joaquin County, gave details of the four people killed. The ages are from 8, 9, 14, and 21. He says the shooting does appear to have been intentional. We're confident that this was not a random act. They walked into this area and was probably looking for somebody in particular. The mayor of Stockton, Christina Fugazi, says she still can't believe something like this took place at a child's birthday party.
Starting point is 00:03:24 I can't imagine a parent bearing their child when they should be making their Christmas list. At the Stockton Church last night, a special service was held. We come before you, God, pray. The mayor says the killings could be gang-related, and there are unconfirmed reports that a popular local rap artist may have been attending the party. Steve Futterman, CBC News, Los Angeles. Now to Indonesia, where widespread flooding and landslides have claimed more than 600. 100 lives.
Starting point is 00:04:00 That's a man in the province of North Sumatra waiting through chest high water. Along with the shocking number of dead, another 400 people are considered missing. Separate weather systems are also swamping parts of Malaysia and Thailand. And in Sri Lanka, more than 360 people have been killed following days of torrential rain and extreme flooding. Hong Kong police say their investigation into last week's apartment, complex fire has revealed netting being used in a renovation project doesn't meet fire safety codes. And the netting was being used to coverage scaffolding. Hong Kong's chief security is saying 20 samples collected from the area, seven failed safety standards.
Starting point is 00:04:42 It's being alleged the contractors were using inexpensive netting to save costs. 151 people were killed in the fires that engulfed seven apartment towers. And that is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
