My name is Natalie Robamed, and in my new podcast, I talked to Alison to try to understand how she went from TV actor to cult member and what she thinks of it all now. Starting point is 00:00:42 I'm Joe Cummings. Talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine are continuing this week on multiple fronts. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is in Paris today, while the EU defense ministers are meeting in Brussels. And at those talks, EU foreign policy chief, Kaya Kallas, is insisting that because Russia started the war, it has to be forced to pay a price. We need to put them in the position where they need to negotiate. Right now, they are not in that position because they think that they can outlast. Us and they also hope that there's a very good offer made because they see that there's a lot of pressure to put on the victim, but none really sacrifices asked from them.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Meanwhile, after meeting with Ukrainian officials over the weekend in Florida, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff is on his way to Moscow to sit down tomorrow with Vladimir Putin. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is insisting that progress is generally being made, but there is still work to be done. The search continues in California for the suspect, or suspects, wanted in connection with the weekend mass shooting. people, including three children, were killed in what police are calling a targeted shooting at a child's birthday party. Steve Futterman reports. We do not have anyone in custody at this time. 24 hours after the deadly mass shooting, the shock hasn't worn off. Patrick Withrow, the sheriff
Starting point is 00:02:12 of San Joaquin County, gave details of the four people killed. The ages are from 8, 9, 14, and 21. He says the shooting does appear to have been intentional. We're confident that this was not a random act. They walked into this area and was probably looking for somebody in particular. The mayor of Stockton, Christina Fugazi, says she still can't believe something like this took place at a child's birthday party. I can't imagine a parent burying their child when they should be making their Christmas list. At the Stockton church last night, a special service was held. We come before you, God, pray.
Starting point is 00:02:53 The mayor says the killings could be gang-related, and there are unconfirmed reports that a popular local rap artist may have been attending the party. Steve Futterman, CBC News, Los Angeles. Across war-torn Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, a warning is being issued about an alarming rise in sexual violence against women and girls.
Starting point is 00:03:15 The International Charity Care says in the DRC alone, more than 67,000 women and girls were sexually assaulted over the first four months of the year. Chris O'Chamringa has more now from Kinshasa, and a warning the details you're about to hear are disturbing. The fighting between government forces and M23 rebels has killed thousands and displaced millions of people since late 2021. It has also led to a surge in sexual violence against women and girls.
Starting point is 00:03:45 The UN Refugee Agency says the situation is alarming in Sudan as well. Nora Catherine Stonton is the UNHCR's Senior Protection and Solutions Coordinator for West and Central Africa. Our operations are facing a funding gap for the refugee response of 62%. This includes the response for gender-based violence. Thousands of women and girls are now bearing the brunt of the conflict at a time when funding cuts by the US have left aid agencies struggling to assist them. Chris Ochamringa for CBC News, Kinshasa. Looks like Prime Minister Mark Carney is introducing
Starting point is 00:04:28 his government's new heritage minister today. A ceremony has been scheduled for Rideau Hall where it's expected a replacement for Stephen Gilbo will be sworn in. Gilbo resigned from Cabinet last week after the government signed an energy understanding with Alberta. Gilbo has left Cabinet, but he's staying on as a Liberal MP. And that is the world this hour.
