Public hearings are underway in Washington into the current state of Coosma, the Canada, U.S. Mexican free trade deal. Under the rules of the agreement, these hearings are held every six years, but this year, they come in the midst

of a Trump trade war. Janice McGregor reports. One voice who's appearing at the hearings this week, Laura Dawson from the Future Borders Coalition, is taking some comfort from the fact that the functionaries at the United States Trade Representative's Office seem to be in charge of this review

and are proceeding in relatively predictable ways. I just hope that the The rules and laws guys can have as great an influence as possible over the politically motivated voices. Because on a rules and regulations basis, Canada comes out very, very strongly. The fear is that this review could balloon into a full-on renegotiation, which would add yet more uncertainty, or that an increasingly erratic White House could threaten to withdraw entirely as a form of leverage. Well, Donald Trump can adjust the details with Canada and Mexico through, side letters, a big overhaul or a termination would require Congress. And with midterms

coming up next year, that could be a politically explosive grenade to throw. Janice McGregor, CBC News, Ottawa. The Canadian government has announced a new round of funding for the Ukrainian war effort. Here's Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand at the NATO summit today in Brussels. Canada's contribution to the purchase of this pearl package will be $200 million, bringing Canada's total contribution to $890 million over the past six months. That $200 million is announced today will go toward the purchase of U.S. military hardware. Onan says Canada is also offering up another $35 million to NATO's general support fund for Ukraine. Meanwhile, despite little progress in the latest round of talks to end the war in Ukraine,

NATO Secretary General Mark Ruta is insisting the Ukrainian war effort remains strong, thanks primarily to its allies, like Canada. With the clock ticking, a deadline is now just weeks away for the federal government to table its plan to reform the First Nations child welfare system. The court-ordered deadline was set after the Assembly of First Nations rejected a previous proposal that was offering more than $47 billion. Olivia Stavanovitch has more.

After almost two decades of litigation, Prime Minister Mark Carney is pledging. His government will be the one. to reform the First Nations child welfare system once and for all. This will help ensure the First Nations children grow up safe. But Carney's plan isn't the only one in the works. This moment and time will go down in history. CBC News was invited to attend a behind-the-scenes session

at the Assembly of First Nations meetings in Ottawa, hosted by Chiefs and Children's Advocates. They are crafting their own proposal. First Nations leaders rejected the previous liberal government. offer of more than $47 billion. Concerned the money wasn't guaranteed, and the discrimination against their children wouldn't end. The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ordered the government

to submit a new plan by December 22nd. It will be compared to the other proposal put forward by chiefs and advocates. Olivia Estevanovich, CBC News, Ottawa. The search for an aircraft that disappeared more than a decade ago is starting up again. The Malaysian government says it is launching a new search for flight MH370 starting December 30th. The plane disappeared in 2014 on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. 239 people were on board. The initial search that followed was the largest in aviation history.

This new effort will involve an underwater exploration team that will focus on an area of the Indian Ocean floor that covers more than 15,000 kilometers. And that is the World This Hour.
