Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. borough.ca. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Mike Miles. Mark Carney's liberals are one member closer to a majority government. Toronto area MP Michael Ma is defecting from the Conservatives just in time for the Liberals' Thursday night Christmas Party. So let's give a warm welcome to our newest member of the Liberal Party, Michael Maugh.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Wow, such a big welcome. Thank you. Thank you. Ma's arrival comes weeks after Nova Scotia MP Chris Tauntremont crossed the floor. Gurney put a seasonal spin on his two newest MPs. You are going to have a much better time spending Christmas with us than Christmas with the cranks. We are all about Santa, not about the Grinch. Conservative leader Pierre Polyev says Ma has let down his constituents, adding he'll eventually have to answer to them.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Ma says he consulted with people in his writing before making the move. move. Catherine Cullen is host of CBC Radios of the House. She has more on Ma's decision to cross party lines. He voted with the Conservatives literally hours before this happened. Tehr Polly was out giving a pretty chipper news conference with the media. No
Starting point is 00:01:42 indications of any problems. Several Conservative MPs have told me they had not heard Ma's name come up in rumor. There was a sense among conservatives I've talked to that they had stopped the bleeding after Chris Dantramal left and Matt Jennerer resigned. This unquestionably shakes things up.
Starting point is 00:01:59 partly because it leaves Mark Carney so close, just one MP away from the majority. If Carney can bring over one more MP and get a majority, all bets may be off. It could throw things into chaos. Polyev would become not just the leader who lost an election. He seemed so clearly destined to win when Justin Trudeau was in power, but perhaps the one who handed a majority over to Mark Carney. You can bet the conservatives are doing everything in their power to make sure no one else in caucus is going anywhere. Host of CBC Radio's the House, Catherine Cullen, in Ottawa. Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lance is stepping down.
Starting point is 00:02:32 He's not leaving politics, though. Lance is running to become permanent leader of the province's progressive conservatives. I don't take decisions like this lightly. I've been speaking with Islanders, party members, of course, our caucus for months. It's hard to consider making a decision like this when you're so focused on the work at hand and the responsibility of being premier. Lance has been interim premier and leader of the PC since February when Dennis King was named ambassador to Ireland. Party rules required Lance to step down before running for the leadership.
Starting point is 00:03:06 He made up his mind Monday after the Conservatives scored a strong by-election victory. Lance has two of her rivals for the leadership. The party will decide at a convention in February. Boyce Thompson will be sworn in his interim premier on Friday. Chiefs of Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta are not happy about the recent pipeline memorand of understanding between the province and Ottawa. They want consultation, and they say they weren't before it was signed. Jennifer Keeler reports.
Starting point is 00:03:34 We have formally notified the Prime Minister that any further attempt by Canada, Alberta, our industry, to move ahead without us, will result in immediate action. As to what that action looks like, Grand Chief Trevor Mercurdy says it could include the First Nations exercising their legal and constitutional rights. He says there was no consultation before Premier Daniel Smith and Prime Minister. Minister Mark Carney agreed to the deal last month, and he wants the process paused until the chiefs sign off on it. The deal paves the way for a bitumen pipeline from Alberta to the BC coast and commits to indigenous consultation in the weeks and months ahead. But for the Treaty 8 Chiefs, that's not enough. Councillor Mike Mercurdy is with the Athabasca-Chippewan First Nation. And the one thing with First Nations in the courts, we have a very good track record of
Starting point is 00:04:17 winning. Jennifer Keeler, CBC News, Calgary. A member of the Canadian Armed Forces has been arrested, charged under the Foreign Interference and Security of Information Act. Master Warrant Officer Matthew Robar worked for Intelligence Command and was investigated for an authorized disclosure of safeguarded information. He faces eight charges and will be tried by court-martial. That is the world this hour. Get all the news you need anytime, anywhere. Download the free CBC News app today.
